Chocolate Tribe’s creature realism in Netflix feature a first for the continent

Chocolate Tribe, the high-end visual effects, animation, and IP development studio, has once again made us say, ‘Wait, is that not real?!’ The game of creature creation on the continent has been taken to another level with their latest animated hyena character named Jonga, a photoreal masterpiece crafted for the Netflix film ‘iNumber Number 2: Jozi Gold.’ This project marks the first CGI-created creature to come from South Africa in a Netflix feature but more importantly, this work proves that even our smaller studios from South Africa can rival the best in the world. Director Dave Meinert goes ‘all in’ on global Nivea campaign

How 70 000 globes did more than light up the town of Stanford

What might have been a bleak Christmas for small-town Stanford has transformed into one of the most memorable festive seasons the town’s tourism has ever seen. Agency 99c, production company 7 Films and Checkers wanted to honour this community that stood together during the town’s recent floods by lighting up the main street with a Santa-approved lights display. Director Dan Mace and his Cape Town-based production company JOE bagged two international Shorty Impact Awards in Los Angeles recently; the ‘Global Impact of The Year’ and ‘Audience Honour’ Awards. Simoné Bobo’s directorial debut wins in support of female Springbok rugby

Executive Producer and Founder of Osu Creative Productions, Simoné Bobo, has made her directing debut. ‘Play with Power’ is a short film created in support of the female Springbok rugby team. The film has been awarded the BEST Audio Visual Content Short Film at this year’s Hollard Sports Industry Awards (that’s like the Loeries for the sports world ya’ll). Star Films’ Tristan Holmes directs nightmarish first of its kind AI-Generated music video for Disturbed

Never afraid of finding new ways of telling big cinematic stories charged with emotions, Star Films’ Tristan Holmes has done it again. His latest work is a music video titled ‘Bad Man’ for the heavy metal band Disturbed which was entirely made using AI-generated imagery created and stitched together by Tristan. The result is a grisly and unnerving work of art.

Cake expands, opens second film production office in the UK

Joburg-based production company Cake have announced that they are opening another production office in London. Founders, Executive Producer Cat Lindsay and Director Nadezna Radcore say the new Cake shop will be servicing their growing number of international clients, but that their local clients need not panic. Both Nadezna and Cat will be travelling between South Africa and the UK regularly to ensure that all local shoots are business as usual.

Sketchbook Studios signs director Ramon Mellett, ‘He’s not our funny guy’

Before becoming a commercials director, Ramon Mellet worked as an editor, photographer and DOP. This production background gives him an edge on any set. South Africa did us proud this year bringing home Metal and Merits for days! Congrats you beauties. Here we showcase all the work by our IDIDTHAT members. Wild clapping and screaming for Promise, who nabbed a whole bloody CNA stationary section with their Gold, Bronze and Silver Pencils. We’ll keep the clapping going strong for TBWA Hunt Lascaris Johannesburg and their TWO Silvers, Joe Public United and 7 Films who both picked up Silver and Post Modern and Massif for their Bronze. You did us damn proud ❤

ARCADE PRESENTS ‘MUTANT’

Following the whirlwind success of their previous music documentary, Future Sound of Mzansi, filmmakers Lebogang Rasethaba and Nthato Mokgata team up again to direct MUTANT, an intimate documentary portrait film featuring Isaac Mutant, a controversial and outspoken rapper from the Cape Flats. The film took 6 years to complete, which allows audiences to witness Isaac’s character evolve on screen, from being a militant and agitated aggressor to a man in pursuit of a greater peace.
