Joe Public named Agency of the Year at The Loerie Awards 2024

Joe Public proudly took to the stage at the 46th annual Loerie Awards in Cape Town as Agency of the Year. Joe Public Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, and their clients bagged 35 of the sought-after birds, including five wins with production partners Romance Films, Darling Films and Post Modern.

Ogilvy brings 19 Loeries home with its clients at the 2024 awards

Ogilvy enjoyed wins on both nights of the Loeries this year, with 19 Loeries in total for clients including Volkswagen SA, KFC, The City of Cape Town, Carling Black Label and Doom. Work was celebrated across a wide number of categories including; Direct, Film, Integrated, Radio, Activations and various industry craft categories.

Friends in High Places

During Loeries Creative Week, Open Chair, in partnership with Nedbank, hosted a speed dating afternoon with a difference. Aptly called, “Friends in High Places,” it was held at The Cape Wheel at the Waterfront. 65 mentees had face time with 31 mentors from across the industry. The pods on the wheel served as an ideal safe space for these women to share their stories and receive guidance.

Chocolate Tribe’s creature realism in Netflix feature a first for the continent

Chocolate Tribe, the high-end visual effects, animation, and IP development studio, has once again made us say, ‘Wait, is that not real?!’ The game of creature creation on the continent has been taken to another level with their latest animated hyena character named Jonga, a photoreal masterpiece crafted for the Netflix film ‘iNumber Number 2: Jozi Gold.’ This project marks the first CGI-created creature to come from South Africa in a Netflix feature but more importantly, this work proves that even our smaller studios from South Africa can rival the best in the world. How 70 000 globes did more than light up the town of Stanford

What might have been a bleak Christmas for small-town Stanford has transformed into one of the most memorable festive seasons the town’s tourism has ever seen. Agency 99c, production company 7 Films and Checkers wanted to honour this community that stood together during the town’s recent floods by lighting up the main street with a Santa-approved lights display. Local production company JOE and director Dan Mace wipe out competition on international stage for the Shorty Impact Awards

Director Dan Mace and his Cape Town-based production company JOE bagged two international Shorty Impact Awards in Los Angeles recently; the ‘Global Impact of The Year’ and ‘Audience Honour’ Awards. Dan (who honestly could make a cube of ice go viral, if he hasn’t yet!) and JOE were recognised for their work for the Beast Philanthropy YouTube channel, where the Beast Philanthropy team, led by Darren Margolias, transformed the Baphumelele orphanage in Khayelitsha. New immersive sound studio at Howard Audio, giant leap for sound in South Africa

In the past two years we’ve seen so much expanding from Howard Audio it’s been hard to keep up! Besides Adam Howard being ranked the top music Composer and Supervisor in 2020 at the Loeries, he’s also made some major moves for South Africa’s sound industry. First it was a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 studio and now Adam has collaborated with heavy-hitter Robin Kohl of Jazzworx to build a new immersive sound recording studio unlike we have ever seen. Star Films’ Tristan Holmes directs nightmarish first of its kind AI-Generated music video for Disturbed

Never afraid of finding new ways of telling big cinematic stories charged with emotions, Star Films’ Tristan Holmes has done it again. His latest work is a music video titled ‘Bad Man’ for the heavy metal band Disturbed which was entirely made using AI-generated imagery created and stitched together by Tristan. Cake expands, opens second film production office in the UK

Joburg-based production company Cake have announced that they are opening another production office in London. Founders, Executive Producer Cat Lindsay and Director Nadezna Radcore say the new Cake shop will be servicing their growing number of international clients, but that their local clients need not panic. Both Nadezna and Cat will be travelling between South Africa and the UK regularly to ensure that all local shoots are business as usual.

ARCADE PRESENTS ‘MUTANT’

Following the whirlwind success of their previous music documentary, Future Sound of Mzansi, filmmakers Lebogang Rasethaba and Nthato Mokgata team up again to direct MUTANT, an intimate documentary portrait film featuring Isaac Mutant, a controversial and outspoken rapper from the Cape Flats. The film took 6 years to complete, which allows audiences to witness Isaac’s character evolve on screen, from being a militant and agitated aggressor to a man in pursuit of a greater peace.
