Proven to be one of our country’s top conceptual and performance directors, this ad further cements Karien’s reputation by showcasing her exceptional visual craft.
It’s time for The One Show results everyone! When we heard South Africa had 21 finalists this year we damn near Black Eyed Pea’d ourselves and exclaimed ‘Boom Boom Pow’. Now it’s great to see this incredible work convert. Congratulations to all of you! With over 50 countries and regions around the world entering, this is big for South Africa. Well done.
This month's IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards were judged by the esteemed, distinguished (and more words that mean fancy) Glenn Jeffery, Executive Creative Director at Grey Africa and Zwelethu Radebe, Director & Partner at Egg Films. Congratulations to directors Karien Cherry from Giant Films and Gareth Kaatze from Groundglass for being awarded Best of Craft this month.
IDIDTHAT is obsessed with Giant Films director Karien Cherry. Ranked as the Number 1 director in the African & Middle Eastern region by the 2020 Loeries, Karien has become one of the most sought-after directors in the country. She won her first Best in Craft in IDIDTHAT’s Craft Awards back in 2015 and we’ve been die hard fans ever since. Having recently judged at the D&AD Awards for the second year in a row, Karien shares her thoughts on the work she wishes she did, her superpowers, bucket list and how she’s almost 2000 weeks. This is what Karien Cherry is obsessed with.
This month's IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards were judged by two industry heavy-hitters, the honourable Suhana Gordhan, Executive Creative Director at Duke Group and Karien Cherry, Director at Giant Films. We bow down in your presence! Big congratulations to editing-maestro Saki Bergh from Left Post for taking Best in Craft for January!
Giant Films have announced the signing of award-winning documentary filmmaker Jessie Zinn for commercial representation. Jessie may be new to the commercial world but she is not new to filmmaking by any means – her latest documentary ‘Drummies’ is a short film that has just been acquired by the New Yorker (yes, the actual New Yorker!). One of South Africa’s accomplished commercial directors and fellow Giant, Karien Cherry, talks to Jessie about the film, the pursuit of truth and how (spoiler alert) their fear of failure drives them to do great work.
SHE DID THAT is a female filmmakers showcase that shines a spotlight on the women in the South African production industry. Although we will only be featuring women and non-binary people, the goal is that it will encourage the inclusion of more underrepresented filmmakers across all production work created by South Africans. This month features Director Ying-Poi De Lacy from Massïf, Director Vanessa Mojapelo from Rumanya Films and Director Karien Cherry from Giant Films.
May’s IDIDTHAT Craft Awards were judged by Giant Films director, Karien Cherry and ECD at Ogilvy SA Joburg, Molefi Thulo. Best in Craft awarded to short film 'Loot' for Screenwriting and Direction. Congrats Greg Rom & Evy Katz, we will have a drink (so many restocked drinks) on you!
Director Karien Cherry from Giant Films and Ogilvy Cape Town share their journey of going viral, dish the dirt on some on-set near disasters and reveal sneaky Easter eggs for die-hard fans like us! Thanks for getting South Africa into the World Cup you clever people you!
You know those ads you love? Well, Karien Cherry from Giant Films directed them. We dug deep into her road to success, made her share all her secrets and got the juice on her latest and most controversial campaign for eNCA.
