From the onset of her directing career, Gale Maimane has drawn on her background in photography, animation and graphic design to effortlessly blend concept and aesthetics in her work. Her trained eye, point of view and affinity for authenticity, enables her to craft impactful visuals that resonate with local audiences. Gale has now returned for her second collaboration with Jägermeister. Infused with super kühl vibes, she has once again created captivating aesthetics with a uniquely South African visual stamp on the work.
SHE DID THAT is a female filmmakers showcase that shines a spotlight on the women in the South African production industry. Although we will only be featuring women and non-binary people, the goal is that it will encourage the inclusion of more underrepresented filmmakers across all production work created by South Africans. This month features Chloe Coetsee from Darling Films, Jabu Nadia Newman from Romance Films and Renee van Reenen from Platypus.

IDIDTHAT is obsessed with Darling Films director Zee Ntuli. He's a filmmaker and a writer. Working in commercials and long-form, Zee always brings his passion for storytelling and style to his work. In 2021 he was ranked 1st for Direction in South Africa by the IDIDTHAT Craft Awards, so naturally, he was the perfect candidate to kick off IDIDTHAT's new OBSESSED Series. Poetry, artificial intelligence, aeroplane seats and the commercial he wishes he directed, this is what Zee Ntuli is obsessed with.
Perhaps the most awarded South African commercials director this year, it’s becoming clear that whatever Darling director Jeana Theron touches turns (and probably converts) to Gold. In collaboration with agency Grid, Jeana's latest offering for FNB is a beautifully crafted BIG juicy bank ad that sees a rousing foot tapping, head bopping, tongue-twisting refresh for the brand. 51 scenes, 18 location moves, 50 main cast members, 1 Jeana Theron, no problem
Darling Films’ director Slim was selected to direct the first TVC for MTN's brand platform relaunch. This commercial repositions MTN across Africa putting the continent on a global stage. The launch of the campaign ‘What Are We Doing Today’ sees Slim unleash an eye-catching and foot-stomping piece of conceptual storytelling that will make you wanna get up and change the world!
With a solid reputation for spotting young directing talent, Darling Film's Executive Producers (and Loeries Hall of Famers!) Lorraine Smit and Melina McDonald announced that they have found the newest Darling Director to join the roster. Judging from the work that Thea Small has shot, we can see why she now goes by the name Darling.
In the last three years alone Director Jeana Theron from Darling Films has been awarded a Gold Cannes Lion and two Loeries Grands Prix. We know right, where are the headlines?! Jeana’s quiet demeanour has perhaps masked her razor-sharp edge and ability to make even the most gruesome storytelling beautiful. In our opinion, this proven versatile contemporary filmmaker has been flying way too low under the radar. So, you probably haven’t thought of Jeana like this, but you really should…
Director Gale Maimane’s great eye and raw approach to storytelling have seen her leap from researcher to director. This shouldn't come as a surprise as she’s already been in demand as a director for quite some time and has a substantial reel to prove it. We go behind her WhatsApp Memoji to find out how this rising star is making her unique voice heard.
We met up with Director Kit to talk about becoming a darling at Darling Films, representation (or lack thereof) of women in the industry, her badass background as a child TV star and why she’s had to say goodbye to her real name, Keitumetse Qhali.
‘It’s Friday night, let’s hit the ballet’ - said no one under the age of 50 ever! Until now. We talk to Darling Films about winning big at Cannes Lions and creating Five! … Six! … Seven! … Eight #BreakingBallet videos. 😜
When Darling Films invited us into their home to meet the family we weren’t ready. Eight multi-talented directors, all equally eccentric, wonderfully weird and extraordinarily skilled in their own way. With one thing in common of course, they’re all absolutely Darling!
