Best in Craft awarded to Slim from Darling Films

June’s IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards were judged by two creative powerhouses armed with their impeccable artistic palates; Camilla Clerke, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy South Africa & Thina Zibi, Independent Director. Thank you for lending us your fiery brilliance. Congratulations to Slim from Darling Films for being awarded Best in Craft by both judges – BOOM.

‘What are the IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards?’ Every month we team up with ad industry leaders to award the finest in South African film and production craft across these different categories: Direction, Editing, Cinematography, Animation and VFX, Online, Original Sound, Sound Design and Final Mix. It’s just another way that we make it ridiculously easy to stay up-to-date with who’s doing the best work in the country.

BEST IN CRAFT (DIRECTION)
KFC ‘#Eat Chicken for Breakfast’
Darling Films | Slim

Awarded by Camilla Clerke & Thina Zibi

‘At the risk of sounding biased, let me tell you that I had absolutely nothing to do with this piece. But just WOW. I really, really wish I did. From the execution of idea to storytelling, casting, performance, SFX/music and craft, Slim got it right with this one. What could have been a seriously chaotic and unclear piece of film is just the opposite. I feel the conspiracy theory. I feel the drama. I love the use of “old” and new footage. It all works together as an intriguing piece of content I want to watch over and over again.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Camilla Clerke, ECD at Ogilvy South Africa

‘I thoroughly enjoyed the direction of this piece. Slim seasoned this with good ingredients. Good performance, gorgeous edit with a strong picture that just constantly cuts on beat. It really breaks through the clutter for me and is quite memorable.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Thina Zibi, Independent Director

CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Nedbank ‘Reality Check’
Spitfire | Katlego Baaitse

Awarded by Camilla Clerke

‘These “social experiments” are never easy to pull off – they can often appear super fake and over-acted (you know the whole “trying to make it seem real” thing). But this one is believable. I love the twist, and how it is subtly revealed using close-ups of older hands. I think the casting is great, and is beautifully captured in a way that doesn’t feel intrusive or “ad-like”. I can feel the emotion in many of the moments, but do think they could have gotten to the point a little quicker 😉. Great piece though.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Camilla Clerke, ECD at Ogilvy South Africa

CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
MTN ‘Morné’
Darling Films | Chloe Coetsee

Awarded by Thina Zibi

‘Chloe did a great job with a beautiful cast selection and performances combined with seamless edit that doesn’t try too hard layered with unexpected song choice. Loved this music selection. Had me smiling throughout.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Thina Zibi, Independent Director

CRAFT  MENTION (DIRECTION)
Spotify ‘Have You Heard’
Spitfire Films | AK & JT

Awarded by Thina Zibi

‘Enjoyed the vibrancy and colour of this story. A gorgeous visual treat. Colours and camera movement kept me glued on screen. Felt like a beautiful Ode to Africa!
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Thina Zibi, Independent Director

CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Savanna ‘Land of Sho’
7 Films | Gorgeous Bushman

Awarded by Camilla Clerke

‘This deserves a special mention as I was entertained for an entire 60 seconds without seeing several scenes, new characters or even extensive dialogue. Through the use of “sho”, this ad gets across drama, humour and even romance. Beautifully shot, acted and graded, it made a lift look pretty and pretty intense all at once.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Camilla Clerke, ECD at Ogilvy South Africa

IDIDTHAT GUEST JUDGES:

Camilla Clerke, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy South Africa
After several years studying B.Com CA, Camilla got out just in time, pursuing a career in advertising. After a number of years working on TV ads, print and radio campaigns, she found her way into the more experimental and innovative side of advertising, focusing on behaviour change through succinct customer journeys with creative solutions at their core. It was here her life changed forever. Exploring innovative solutions to solve business problems; like building a real-life website on a 2km cycling track for Toyota RAV4, turning a non-profit organisation into a Media Agency to feed hungry children for the PSFA, and telling people to “say it with a cactus” instead of flowers in Netflorist’s drought campaign, Camilla has won a number of awards, both locally and internationally; including Cannes Lions, Loeries, Bookmarks, Webbys, D&AD, FWA and One Show. She has also sat on the Cannes, Dubai Lynx, Creativepool, One Show, Loeries and Bookmarks panels, and has a seat on both the IAB and Creative Circle councils in South Africa. She was also in the top 100 Creativepool’s Creative Industry Influencers of the Year for 2020.

Thina Zibi, Independent Director
Thina Zibi is passionate about storytelling. A city-lover with roots in rural Transkei, Thina trained as an art director at AAA School of Advertising but really believes her learning comes from the art of people-watching, spending hours between coffee shops and dingy dance floors in downtown Johannesburg. What sets her apart is Thina’s creative flare, emotive approach, a touch of humour, and her ability to meaningfully merge all the beautiful things she loves about people: how we laugh with our entire bodies, eat with our hands, open bottle caps with our teeth, and the words we make up to find one another across language barriers. Thina got her start working in leading agencies, carving her way up from Junior to Creative Director, but her love for visual story-telling soon pushed her to follow her dream of becoming a film director. Currently, Thina’s short film “Bompi” is doing the rounds on the international film festival circuit, playing such festivals as PAFF and AFRIFF. Her 3-part mini web series funded by the international Black Women Distrupt programme was showcased on Kweli TV, and her first short, Bakhona was an art direction finalist and won a cinematography award at My Rode Reel. With her understanding of the advertising world and obsession with performance and character, Thina’s ability to collaborate on projects is valued by the creative teams who work with her.
