The 2022 Loeries Official Rankings were released last week and although we don't think awards and accolades mean everything (they're pretty cool though), they definitely get our attention when they reflect the high level of work being created by some of the talented women and non-binary people in our industry right now. Below we have showcased five of the top-ranked film directors in the country according to the Loeries. Congratulations and here's to seeing a lot more representation in 2023 💪🏾
Working with Joe Public, the team at Bioscope were tasked to create the launch campaign of the new insurance company, The Unlimited. The result of the ambitious undertaking is 21 short films that are all united by one common trait, they are about people who have the undying will to defy expectation and challenge the norm. We go behind the minds of Bioscope to find out what it took to bring the campaign to life.
‘Free Surfers’ is a two-part documentary series honouring two South African surfers who overcame adversity and found their freedom in the ocean. This is a significant piece of South African storytelling, in fact, without it an important part of history might have been lost forever. We go behind the scenes with CCO of Net#work BBDO Roanna Williams and Bioscope Films’ director Kyla Philander.
This month's IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards were judged by Mohlalefi Lentsoane, Executive Creative Director at M&C Saatchi Abel (JHB) and Mfundo Mkhize, Director at The Star Film Company. Congratulations to Kyla Philander and Fausto Becatti walking away with May's Craft Awards. We don't know what they put in the water at Bioscope Films (maybe Corona and Espolōn Tequila??) but it's working!
SHE DID THAT is a female filmmakers showcase that shines a spotlight on the women in the South African production industry. Although we will only be featuring women and non-binary people, the goal is that it will encourage the inclusion of more underrepresented filmmakers across all production work created by South Africans. This month features Director Nadezna Radcore from CAKE, Director Kyla Philander from Bioscope Films and Director Sam Sterling-Court from The Star Film Company.
We talk to Director Kyla Philander about the importance of shifting the way body, race and gender are shown in advertising, and their own search to portray South Africa’s truth with empathy. Wanna see the future of advertising in SA? Meet Kyla Philander.
