Best in Craft (Direction): January 2025
Darling Films | Thea Small
Savanna “Dumbell’, ‘Demure’ and ‘5am” (Director’s Cut)
“I really Love Thea’s Savanna pieces. They feel concise, with simple but clear insights. It’s a great example of how effective quintessential ad work like this can be. They’re not talking to everyone at the same time, the focus is laser sharp. The casting and performance are wonderful, the characters are immediately recognisable, and each scenario unnervingly familiar. The comedy is subtle and sophisticated and they do well to avoid the stereotypically high pitched, fast talking comedy voice trope that seems unfortunately endemic to South African ads. Each word here feels like it lands exactly where it ought to, aligning carefully with the piece’s elegant camera work. This series of ads make the product the point even in its absence, showing up at the very end but never feeling like it’s missing. Thea has her hand on the dial all the way through, tuning everything to perfection.”
– Mzonke Maloney, Director at Carbon Films
Craft Mention (Direction): January 2025
Darling Films | Thea Small
Savanna “Dumbell’, ‘Demure’ and ‘5am” (Director’s Cut)
‘I thought this campaign deserved a mention because it’s so refreshing in its simplicity. There’s nowhere for a director to hide with a script like this – everything hinges on the performance, and I think Thea did a great job of delivering really charming characters and smiles all round.‘
– Verona Meyer, Executive Creative Director at M&C Saatchi Abel
Best in Craft (Direction): March 2025
Darling Films | Zee Ntuli
KFC ‘Bottomless Bucket’
“This ad is a craft masterpiece. Zee and Evi build tension like a Jordan Peele thriller – every look, every pause, every eerie smile feels intentional. It doesn’t just sell a product (an Easter promo), it creates an entire world around it that draws you in from the start. It’s a blend of absurdity, sci-fi vibes, and impeccable craft. An unexpected tonal shift for KFC – in the best possible way – and honestly made me wish ‘I did that’.”
– Chantelle Dos Santos, Creative Director at Joe Public
Best in Craft (Direction): March 2025
Darling Films | Zee Ntuli
KFC ‘Bottomless Bucket’
“I found the humour and aesthetic focus both razor sharp and a thrill to watch. The ending is a great reward that really makes this ensemble piece a standout!”
– Gale Maimane, Director at Darling Films
Best in Craft (Direction): April 2025
Darling Films | Chloe Coetsee
Simba ‘Together Tastes Better With Simba’ (Director’s Cut)
“All the elements come together to truly evoke the intended emotions, while delivering the stories in a simple manner.”
– Melusi Tshabalala, Executive Creative Director at VML
Craft Mention (Direction): April 2025
Darling Films | Chloe Coetsee
Simba ‘Together Tastes Better With Simba’ (Director’s Cut)
“An example of craft elevating the idea – Chloe gets a mention for her tonal steer on this, which makes the piece. Loved the meandering track. The “Don’t be like that” moment gets me every time. Nicely shot, effortless pacing… all in all, a lovely, gentle nudge. New soul-flavoured Simba.”
– Karien Cherry, Director at Giant Films
Best in Craft (Direction): May 2025
Darling Films | Zee Ntuli
KFC ‘Rossa Festive Campaign’ (Director’s Cut)
“Beautifully crafted commercial. Love the textures, love the performance, the cinematography.”
– Sbu Sitole, Chief Creative Officer at The Odd Number
Craft Mention (Direction): May 2025
Darling Films | Zee Ntuli
KFC ‘Rossa Festive Campaign’ (Director’s Cut)
“The KFC festive campaign weaves an engaging narrative that captivates us through the characters’ journey and intriguing encounters combined with the magical realism of the bottomless KFC, creating an enchanting film.”
– Zwelethu Radebe, Director at Egg Films
Best in Craft (Direction): August 2025
Darling Films | Chloe Coetsee
Toyota ‘Hilux Town’
“My Best in Craft is Toyota ‘Hilux Town’ – I love the moving camera, love the casting, love the pace. You see just enough of each character, of each scene to want to watch it again. It all brings the idea to life beautifully and I haven’t been able to stop whistling and nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-ing for days. Effortless enjoyment from Chloe”
– Cindy Lee, Director at The Star Film Company
Best in Craft (Direction): September 2025
Darling Films | Zee Ntuli
Savanna ‘Mozzies’ (Director’s Cut)
“This is a brilliant example of playful, culturally tuned-in storytelling. Firstly, I loved the clever placement of the Savanna logo in the real outdoors! A small detail but big statement. I enjoyed that this world of Savanna was kept realistic and not overly curated, a breath of fresh air from how we know the brand, while still maintaining its humorous and playful voice. The performances, human and creature alike, are instantly memorable, culminating perfectly in that final, comedic slap of the female character. VFX and live action blend seamlessly. Mosquitoes and chameleons feel like natural extensions of the environment, never gimmicky. The edit’s rhythm, with its wild repetition and mash-up of “We Outside”, builds comedic momentum that lands precisely and never overstays its welcome. A spot that’s smart, funny, and exquisitely crafted.”
– Thina Zibi, Independent Director
Best in Craft (Direction): November 2025
Darling Films | Zee Ntuli
Action Aid ‘I’ll Marry When I Want’ (Directors Cut)
“This piece wins for me because of a series of choices the director made. It takes all the tropes of wedding material – the white chairs, dress and flowers, the couple on the cake topper – and transitions them in front of your eyes. These symbols become the girl’s acts of playful rebellion. Her soccer field, her hopscotch shoes, her swords and slain dragons. The ghostly static symbols are given new life through camera movement and editing. Her blue uniform is the vibrance and contrast in the white and brown wedding cemetery. The ominous embrace now mirrored but with the warmth of her sister. The transition in music, editing energy and performance doesn’t let the audience fall into the emotional trap of somberness and lamenting, which is where this could have gone. Instead, you’re left with a feeling of joyful defiance – a triumph of the spirit of young girls.”
– Suhana Gordhan, CCO at LoveSong
Best in Craft (Direction): December 2025
Darling Films | Slim
McDonald’s ‘Golden Arches’ (Director’s Cut)
“My Best In Craft for December goes to Slim from Darling Films for the enjoyable McDonald’s ‘Golden Arches’ spot. Light, floaty and beautifully cinematic with characters that I liked. It made me smile and feel like a burger.”
– Juliet Honey, Creative Director at TBWA South Africa
Best in Craft (Direction): December 2025
Darling Films | Slim
McDonald’s ‘Golden Arches’ (Director’s Cut)
“Best In Craft goes to ‘Golden Arches’ Director’s Cut for a few simple reasons. It’s a beautifully simple idea, handled with real confidence and restraint. Slim makes something technically complex feel light. Easy. Almost casual to watch.
There’s a quiet magic running through it. That feeling of being pulled out of the everyday. Of being saved, just for a moment, from the dull rhythm of life. Slim taps into that without pushing it or underlining it.
What really lands for me is how the whole thing comes together. This is where directing shows. The film becomes more than the sum of its parts. Cinematography, edit, wardrobe, performance. Nothing is shouting. Everything is in conversation.
It feels effortless, even though you know it isn’t. Rich, graphic images. A smooth, floating edit. Choices that stay out of the way of the feeling. It’s just good! Clean. Thoughtful. Properly made.”
– Zee Ntuli, Director at Darling Films
Craft Mention (Direction): March 2025
7 Films | Jozua Malherbe
(Short Film) ‘Engel’
“Heartfelt and exceptional expression of grief. Unexpected and intimate. An avant-garde and artistic choice I found chaotic and compelling – a Kubler-Ross rollercoaster that maps a very unique perspective of one man’s internal monologue in grief.”
– Gale Maimane, Director at Darling Films
Craft Mention (Direction): July 2025
7 Films | Lourens Van Rensburg
Nedbank ‘Barcelona’
“I saw this campaign the other day and it immediately caught my attention. This piece in incompatible hands could have resulted in something very different – but no. Lourens most certainly elevated it and I can feel his influence on the film. He has a very mature, nuanced interpretation and perspective which gave the idea life and integrity. I loved the setup vs the reward aspect of it for the viewer but what it also did, was land a very simple and clear product offering intertwined with a bit of heart.”
– Grant De Sousa, Director at They
Best in Craft (Direction & Cinematography): August 2025
7 Films | Hayden Brown
Front Runner ‘The Final Chapter’
“A strong piece that ticks more than a few boxes of its entry category. An effortless watch, it draws you in and stirs a sense of wanderlust within moments. With longer formats comes the challenge to sustain rhythm and engagement – a challenge this short film meets with remarkable craft. The director strikes a graceful balance between narration, featured elements, and an editing style that holds the audience throughout. Front Runner: The Final Chapter stands out as this month’s CRAFT BEST for me – a testament to storytelling executed with skill and heart.”
– Thandeka Gilbert, Creative Director at McCann Joburg
Craft Mention (Direction): August 2025
7 Films | Lourens van Rensburg
Nedbank ‘Travel Insurance’
“Gripping and provocative storytelling delivered through a memorable docu-style lens. The carefully composed, non-linear sequencing creates a compelling misdirect within this “day in the life” narrative. In just a short span, the piece vividly captures the inner tension of its lead character. Bold and unafraid, it draws attention to the realities of travel in a way that feels refreshingly human for a bank – no “show and tell,” no talking at consumers, just a confident trust in the audience to connect with an authentic experience.”
– Thandeka Gilbert, Creative Director at McCann Joburg
Craft Mention (Editing): August 2025

– Danni Pinch, Executive Creative Director at Accenture Song

‘Die Houtkapper’ Short Film
“The effect this film had on me is really hard to put into words, as it’s the culmination of so many narrative elements as a holistic craft package (but here goes…)
The craft in this short film started waaay before even rolling a camera, with the intention and effort of seeking out and finding such a uniquely authentic story. Christiaan’s story caught me completely off-guard, in the best way: within 30 seconds I was captivated – totally forgetting that I was watching the actions of a character with a disability, who has overcome a (probably horrific) experience and profound adversity. I just got swept up in the enjoyment of how this man and the film made me feel.
Christiaan’s contagious, child-like personality contrasts poignantly with the lived wisdom of his narration – all carried and guided by the delicate shifts in the soundtrack. The choice and handling of the music alone requires a masterclass. The edit and story construction reveal a simple, beautifully paced and fully satisfying experience. It would have been easy to rely on Christiaan’s detailed history to play on the heart-strings or sensationalise the film, but the understated decision to empower his resilient character creates a mood of uplifting intrigue that really lands the theme of overcoming against all odds. This speaks volumes to the depth, care and sensitivity of the director for both the story and his craft.
Most of all I love that as a short film, it just is. It doesn’t try to prove anything, make a personal statement, or be something other than a story I didn’t know I really needed to experience, until I did. Beautifully handled Hayden.”
– Slim, Director at Darling Films
Craft Mention (Cinematography): December 2025
7 Films | Lourens van Rensburg
Chicken Licken ‘Soulfluencer’
“A special mention must go to Lourens van Rensburg from 7 Films for Chicken ‘Licken Soulfluencer’ for cinematography. The small-town Americana cinematic language with its spacious, locked-off frames and beautifully observed character portraits heightens the awkward, out-of-place energy of the announcer. Every shot reinforces just how out of place he is. And that’s exactly the point.”
– Juliet Honey, Creative Director at TBWA South Africa
Best in Craft (Direction): July 2025
Carbon Films | Bruno Bossi
KFC ‘K.A.I.I.A. Anything For The Taste’
“A clever and captivating spin on KFC’s classic platform of the lengths people will go for the taste. The director brings an inanimate character to life (quite literally), with storytelling and pacing that build just the right amount of tension. Performances, tone, and atmosphere are finely tuned, all leading to a perfectly timed twist. A timely piece, masterfully crafted.”
– Mbeu ‘Snooze’ Kambuwa, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy South Africa
Craft Mention (Direction): July 2025
Carbon Films | Bruno Bossi
KFC ‘K.A.I.I.A. Anything For The Taste’
“As a director consistency is always key and coming off the back of KFC ‘Cake’ to this – not much more needs to be said. It is a well executed and well thought out creation, the lead character and peripheral performances are all seamless. Furthermore, the world built around A.I was perfect and terrifying. Personally, I liked the dark touches and the overall tone. Credit is most certainly due.”
– Grant De Sousa, Director at They
Best in Craft (Direction): September 2025
Carbon Films | Bruno Bossi
KFC ‘M ssing Piece’
“I love the quirky world that this piece sets up and that the humour is played straight (which is always the way to go for me). Many of the familiar ad choices aren’t made in this piece which gives it an appealing edge – and there is a lot of love and craft in the playful details.”
– Danni Pinch, Executive Creative Director at Accenture Song
Craft Mention (Direction): September 2025
Carbon Films | Bruno Bossi
KFC ‘M ssing Piece’
“A smart and playful spot that proves the power of simplicity. The idea is executed with such clarity, once the lead character notices one gap, he begins seeing them everywhere, and the concept spirals in a way that feels both relatable and delightful. What makes this piece stand out is the craft. The art direction is sharp and inventive, with each ‘missing piece’ moment thoughtfully designed to land visually and narratively. The humour is also heightened not just by what we see, but by the sound design, which beautifully ties the story together and guides the audience through the unfolding gag. A clever concept elevated by meticulous craft, every missing piece lands with wit and precision.”
– Thina Zibi, Independent Director
Best in Craft (Editing Craft): February 2025
Deliverance | Ricky Boyd
Chicken Licken ‘Boneless Bites of Soul’
“There’s no doubt Greg knows how to bring nuanced craft to his work. This Chicken Licken spot is no different: he weaves the idea through in all the little details, crafting the story in tight beats of timing. Shoutout to Ricky Boyd for a solid edit. I enjoyed the build, and suspense, as well as the rich characters and performances in this piece. Lastly, the way the final title sits so beautifully in the frame didn’t go unnoticed. That’s the craft. It’s got the meat, AND the bones. Well done.”
– Fausto Becatti, Director at Bioscope Films
Craft Mention (Editing Craft): June 2025
Deliverance | Ricky Boyd
Nedbank ‘#GetMoneyFit’
“Nedbank’s “Get Money Fit” is one of those ads where the editing does the heavy lifting (see what I did there). It jumps between scenes, characters, and visual metaphors at pace, but never loses clarity. The timing is spot on, the transitions are playful and the rhythm carries you through from start to finish without dropping the momentum. It’s tight and knows exactly when to speed up and slow down. A proper workout in editing (see what I did there).”
– Roanna Williams, CCO at Boundless

KFC ‘K.A.I.I.A. Anything For The Taste’
“I was extremely impressed by the seamless blend of VFX into this story. But what pushed it over the edge for me was the innovative use of real world machinery learning and the use of Lidar. It was an inspired choice. A technology used predominantly in other fields such as – Autonomous vehicles, Archaeology etc and, I found it to be a very interesting and bold choice to use it as a creative tool. A big congrats to the team behind this as I think it enhanced the overall feeling of the A.I.’s character and truly brought it to life.”

Uber Eats ‘Groceries till Midnight – Basketball’ & Uber Eats ‘Groceries till Midnight – Drinks Party’
“Nice characters, easy performances, concise storytelling, conceptually clear – a rewarding ramp up of the humour at the end. It’s easy to overlook the craft that goes into something as simple as this, but sometimes, directing is knowing what not to do. Neat, Pete”

Chicken Licken ‘The Homecoming’
“Chicken Licken’s ‘The Homecoming’, directed by Pete Pohorsky, is a quietly entertaining piece of storytelling, the kind that lands its punchline with a straight face and trusts the audience to catch the joke. It follows one man’s determined journey through the wilderness, led only by the scent of fried chicken, and plays it totally straight. Which is exactly why it works. The cinematography adds the weight to the journey: beautiful, wide, dusty frames, honest, natural light, no unnecessary frills and intentional framing. It’s confident, considered, and never tries too hard. The standout however, is the restraint that elevates the idea. It’s not trying too hard. It just is.”

Spitfire Films | Katlego Baaitse
Spotify ‘Spotify Radar (Thakzin)’
“This piece of film translates the artist’s music visually and beautifully. It could easily have been just another doccie-style endorsement, but instead, every frame mirrors the syncopated rhythm and experimental pulse of 3 Step Afro House. The texture, color grading, and lensing choices build a world perfectly suited to Thakzin’s story. Nothing feels manufactured. It’s not trying to prove it’s African, or cool, or cinematic, it just is. That kind of quiet confidence is rare, especially in branded work.”
– Saf Sindhi, Founder & CCO at Bananas South Africa

BIC ‘Chef’ (Director’s Cut)
“With BIC, ‘Chef’, it would have been very easy to chase something like The Bear. Go frenetic. Long lenses. Constant pressure. That language is right there for the taking. Instead, Josh and the team pulled back and employed restraint. The piece feels cared for. You can feel the hands on it. It’s naturalistic. Tactile.”

Cell C ‘The Sound of Cell C – Audio Rebrand’
“Howard Audio gets a mention by going back to Cell C’s roots to create their new sonic branding. We’ve seen the technique before, but I just love how he foraged through every corner of the company to find the authentic sounds of the business through the original hardware. As companies rebrand, they run the risk of losing connection to their heritage. This bit of craft keeps the brand’s soul, while progressing.”
– Alex Goldberg, Creative Partner at Ogilvy South Africa

Howard Audio | Adam Howard
Chicken Licken ‘Soul Food To The World’
“This piece plays with the ‘save the world’ trope really well. What lifts it for me is how seriously it commits. There’s no distance from the idea. No winking at the audience. That sincerity is exactly where the comedy comes from. The musicians fully lean in. They treat the parody like it matters, and that’s what makes it funny. The performances are genuinely great. Everyone feels on the same page, tonally and emotionally. It’s nuanced. Restrained. And confident enough to trust the idea without overplaying it.”
– Zee Ntuli, Director at Darling Films
Craft Mention (Direction): May 2025

Sanlam ‘Boss’
“The casting and performances, together with the offbeat ‘little touches’ made this piece stand out: the stage setting, the oversized cup, the bosses’ snarky snort, the spokesman’s filing cabinet residence – all directorial choices that pull together with well-timed performance beats. Creating such a definitive tone for the brand immediately separates them from the rest of the expected financial services messaging out there.”
