This month’s IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards were judged by Alex Goldberg, Creative Partner at Ogilvy South Africa and Fausto Becatti, Director at Bioscope Films. Big congrats to the team behind the latest Chicken Licken spot, drum(stick) roll please…. director Greg Gray from Romance & editor Ricky Boyd from Deliverance.

‘What are the IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards?’ Every month we team up with ad industry leaders to award the finest in South African film and production craft across these different categories: Direction, Editing, Cinematography, Animation and VFX, Online, Original Sound, Sound Design and Final Mix. It’s just another way that we make it ridiculously easy to stay up-to-date with who’s doing the best work in the country.

     BEST IN CRAFT

Chicken Licken ‘Boneless Bites of Soul’

BEST IN CRAFT (DIRECTION)
Romance | Greg Gray
Awarded by Alex Goldberg & Fausto Becatti

BEST IN CRAFT (EDITING)
Deliverance | Ricky Boyd
Awarded by Fausto Becatti

Judge’s comment: ‘This piece has got that Greg Gray touch to it. Production value, casting, dramatic performances, camera language (love the dog paws) and charming touches with the classic cartoon, all come together nicely to tell this story. It’s a well-rounded, considered piece that tickles the funny bone. There’s a lot of love that goes into the work from the lovely people at Romance. Very on brand for Mr Gray and his team. – Alex Goldberg, Creative Partner at Ogilvy South Africa

Judge’s comment: ‘There’s no doubt Greg knows how to bring nuanced craft to his work. This Chicken Licken spot is no different: he weaves the idea through in all the little details, crafting the story in tight beats of timing. Shoutout to Ricky Boyd for a solid edit. I enjoyed the build, and suspense, as well as the rich characters and performances in this piece. Lastly, the way the final title sits so beautifully in the frame didn’t go unnoticed. That’s the craft. It’s got the meat, AND the bones. Well done.– Fausto Becatti, Director at Bioscope Films

      CRAFT MENTION

CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Dorito’s ‘Speak Up’ (Director’s Cut)
Egg Films | Kyle Lewis

Awarded by Alex Goldberg

Judge’s comment: ‘Craft Mention goes to Kyle Lewis in the Direction category for Dorito’s “Speak Up”. I love the casting in this. Kyle has amassed a great collection of archetypes and wrapped them up nicely in a variety of knitted items to give this piece flavour. Every time I watch it, I find myself looking at a different family member. The Art Direction has a charming quirk to it with a nice nod to the Dorito’s shape, and I like that the product plays a role throughout the story.’

CRAFT MENTION (SOUND – ORIGINAL MUSIC (SONIC BRANDING) CRAFT)
Cell C ‘The Sound of Cell C – Audio Rebrand’
Howard Audio | Adam Howard

Awarded by Alex Goldberg

Judge’s comment: ‘Howard Audio gets a mention by going back to Cell C’s roots to create their new sonic branding. We’ve seen the technique before, but I just love how he foraged through every corner of the company to find the authentic sounds of the business through the original hardware. As companies rebrand, they run the risk of losing connection to their heritage. This bit of craft keeps the brand’s soul, while progressing.’
