South Africa’s D&Ad Awards – all the winners & the work 2024
Since the announcement of the 62nd D&AD Awards late last week, our dedicated hamsters have been curating a showcase of the brilliant work behind the results. Here are the exceptionally talented South Africans who brought home the Pencils — now you know who to collaborate with next. Congratulations to these beauties for making us proud!
‘D&AD exists to stimulate, enable and award creative excellence in design and advertising. D&AD is an education charity that promotes and enables excellence in design and advertising. Each year, D&AD Awards gather the world’s best creative work from across the commercial design, advertising, production and craft disciplines to be judged by more than 300 global creative leaders, practitioners and innovators.’
Here’s a quick look at the different D&AD Pencil levels:
Shortlist: Work that demonstrates merit, worthy of recognition and in the top echelon of entries. It’s awarded in all categories in the first instance.
Wood Pencil: The best of the year in advertising, design, craft, culture and impact.
Graphite Pencil: For stand-out work that rises above the rest, worthy of consideration for a Yellow Pencil.
Yellow Pencil: The iconic D&AD Yellow Pencil, awarded only to outstanding work that achieves true creative excellence.
Black Pencil: The ultimate creative accolade, reserved for ground-breaking work. Only a handful of these are awarded each year, if any.
If you or your company worked on any of these projects and your credits are not added it means you’re not a member of IDIDTHAT, which is tragic because you are one of the best in your field and nobody knows about it. Don’t be like Van Gogh and only become famous when you’re dead, do it now! Check out our membership options or contact studio@ididthat.co to get signed up and we’ll get you and your work seen by the right people..you’re dead, do it now!

South African copyright in crises
ACT NOW - a new campaign that aims to stop the passing of the controversial Copyright & Performers’ Protection Amendment Bills has been spearheaded by, amongst others, the Commercial Producers Association (CPA) which strongly opposes the new legislation which will be detrimental to the advertising industry and all other creative sectors in South Africa.
Entering the Ayanda Duma era, Robot’s director is unleashed and unafraid.
Ayanda Duma’s pursuit of challenging the status quo coupled with her passion for exploring South African culture, black identity, queer culture and femme culture is what drives her as a director. She proudly stands by her values especially when it comes to breaking down stigmas and stereotypes, she is also an absolute damn joy, warm, generous with her time and her razor-sharp wit. Even when navigating sensitive subject matter, Ayanda always remains at the core of her craft, as exemplified by her latest project - ‘Sex and Pleasure’ for Showmax.
Samantha Nell, making her mark in performance directing
Gentlemen Films director, Samantha Nell, has quickly made a name for herself as a strong performance director with a talent for storytelling. Her reel showcases stand-out work in both comedy and drama, often combining the two, and has seen her directing some of the most renowned and respected actors in South Africa, in commercials and now in her debut feature film for Netflix. We caught up with the Gentlemen Films director about her rise in the industry.
Director Dani Hynes launches Love Films. We love that idea.
Loves Films is doing it a little differently. It’s a production company that provides a “come-and-go-as-you-please” home for freelance directors and a more permanent residency option for those who want to stay longer. Love Films is another way to bring ideas to life. ‘Curating creative and production teams to collaborate with on commercials, music videos or films means that we can create bespoke solutions to every board, budget and schedule that comes our way.’ Says Dani. It’s about putting the right heads together to show each job the Love it deserves.
Meet the newest production company on our radar, welcome And.
