South Africa’s D&Ad Awards – all the winners & the work 2024
Since the announcement of the 62nd D&AD Awards late last week, our dedicated hamsters have been curating a showcase of the brilliant work behind the results. Here are the exceptionally talented South Africans who brought home the Pencils — now you know who to collaborate with next. Congratulations to these beauties for making us proud!
‘D&AD exists to stimulate, enable and award creative excellence in design and advertising. D&AD is an education charity that promotes and enables excellence in design and advertising. Each year, D&AD Awards gather the world’s best creative work from across the commercial design, advertising, production and craft disciplines to be judged by more than 300 global creative leaders, practitioners and innovators.’
Here’s a quick look at the different D&AD Pencil levels:
Shortlist: Work that demonstrates merit, worthy of recognition and in the top echelon of entries. It’s awarded in all categories in the first instance.
Wood Pencil: The best of the year in advertising, design, craft, culture and impact.
Graphite Pencil: For stand-out work that rises above the rest, worthy of consideration for a Yellow Pencil.
Yellow Pencil: The iconic D&AD Yellow Pencil, awarded only to outstanding work that achieves true creative excellence.
Black Pencil: The ultimate creative accolade, reserved for ground-breaking work. Only a handful of these are awarded each year, if any.
If you or your company worked on any of these projects and your credits are not added it means you’re not a member of IDIDTHAT, which is tragic because you are one of the best in your field and nobody knows about it. Don’t be like Van Gogh and only become famous when you’re dead, do it now! Check out our membership options or contact studio@ididthat.co to get signed up and we’ll get you and your work seen by the right people..you’re dead, do it now!

First Pencil’s latest car commercial for Omoda blasts into the future
Back with another car ad and hot off the heels of their campaign for Standard Bank, there is no denying First Pencil is having a moment! The team’s latest commercial for Omoda and agency Clockwork Media, directed by Justine Calverley and EP’d by Lebo Mabuela, is a prime example of their ability to merge their technical chops with some laser-infused cinematic storytelling. The ad has beams cutting through the scenes like something straight out of a sci-fi movie (with an added nod to Back to the Future) and the impressive in-camera work leaves you wondering what’s real and what’s not.
Left Post hits 18 years, Owners Saki and Jacqui reflect on their journey and a legacy of iconic work
18 years ago, Jacqui Pearson and Saki Bergh became the new owners of Left Post and set out to carve their own space in the post-production industry. With Jacqui Pearson’s background in broadcast and Saki Bergh’s expertise in editing, they transformed Left Post Production from a small start-up company into an award-winning post powerhouse. Their partnership is one for the history books, a partnership that has produced some of our country’s iconic work from the past two decades and played a huge part in shaping South Africa’s post industry.

The Syndicate 2.0: Hits the Post-Production Suite Spot
Since Editor Nic Goodwin launched The Syndicate four years ago, the company has undergone an interesting evolution. Initially taking on a minimalist approach with a fully remote post-production process and a team of freelance talent, The Syndicate was one of the first post facilities of its kind in South Africa and a huge success for Nic. But it was time to take the next step forward and the post house has evolved to meet familiar client demands while sticking to its core ethos. Welcome to The Syndicate 2.0.
Young Creatives call on The Loeries to clean up their act
Clean Creatives South Africa is excited to launch the Creative Cleanup 2024 Young Creatives Challenge (formerly known as the Clean Creatives Schools Challenge). The challenge is an invitation to South Africa’s young creatives to join Clean Creatives SA in putting pressure on The Loeries to stop awarding creative work for the fossil fuel industry. Some creatives are unaware that they are directly connected to speeding up climate change by creating and building false perceptions for fossil fuel companies.
IDIDTHAT Monthly Craft Awards
Find out who’s doing the best work in South Africa. Every month we team up with industry leaders to award South Africa’s best in Production Craft. Huge thanks to our recent guest judges who’ve taken the time to judge IDIDTHAT Craft Awards. Look how sexy they are in these black and white pictures we put up – FYI we used the ‘Inkwell’ filter.
Best in Film Craft: April 2017
Tim Beckering, Creative Director at Network BBDO in JHB, awards iDidTht’s Best in Film Craft this month. Tim is a total speed freak, like a local version of The Fast and the Furious, except Tim knows when to stop. Which is why he only chose one Best of Reel and one Special Mention campaign this month #MicDrop #Boom
Best in Film Craft: March 2017
Multi-award winning Steph van Niekerk awards this month’s best in film craft by Production Companies. She’s a small person so you may not always see her entering a room, but don’t mess with her because she’ll throw SA’s first (and only) TV and Cinema Gold One Show statue at you.
Best in Film Craft: February 2017
Mike Barnwell, Executive Creative Director at FCB Cape Town, awards the best in film craft by Production Companies this month. Mike left New Zealand in 2012, sending the country into a downward spiral - it is now the 4th highest user of amphetamines worldwide. Meanwhile, since Mike moved to Cape Town, the city has been named the world’s ‘Best City’. Coincidence? We think not…
