We’re not sure if you’re all using AI technology in ways that we haven’t thought of, because damn there was a lot of good work this month! A huge congratulations for rising to the top Kim Geldenhuys from 0307, Greg Rom from Gentlemen FilmsAudio Militia & Polycat Animation.

‘What are the IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards?’ Every month we team up with ad industry leaders to award the finest in South African film and production craft across these different categories: Direction, Editing, Cinematography, Animation and VFX, Online, Original Sound, Sound Design and Final Mix. It’s just another way that we make it ridiculously easy to stay up-to-date with who’s doing the best work in the country.

BEST IN CRAFT (DIRECTION)
McDonald’s Austria ‘Sorry Mom’
0307 | Kim Geldenhuys

Awarded by Marcus Moshapalo

‘Not a single piece of audible dialogue exchanged. Just a simple story told through a series of beautifully shot moments that made me invested in what was unfolding. The cast gave amazing emotionally charged performances. Each sequence and how it played out seemed well-considered. The choice of soundtrack helped stitch the narrative nicely together.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Marcus Moshapalo, Executive Creative Director at VMLY&R

BEST IN CRAFT (DIRECTION / ORIGINAL MUSIC, SOUND DESIGN & FINAL MIX / ANIMATION & VFX)
Flying Fish ‘Long Face’
Gentlemen Films | Greg Rom (Direction)
Audio Militia (Original Music, Sound Design and Final Mix)
Polycat Animation (Animation and VFX)
Entered by Gentlemen Films on behalf of Audio Militia and Polycat

Awarded by Tebogo Malope

‘This month has had some incredible spots, so judging was particularly difficult. However, this spot stood out for me as it ticked many craft boxes, every medium used was executed in the highest level. The intricate balance of multi-media the director struck with a surprising twist in every scene and well crafted sound design makes this spot my favourite, well done Greg Rom and all the technicians involved.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Tebogo Malope, Director at The Star Film Company

CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Savanna ‘Savanna x Wanda’
Carbon Films | Mzonke Maloney

Awarded by Marcus Moshapalo

‘I loved Savanna’s satirical take on a high fashion ad. The shots of the models in their bright outfits contrasted against a city underwater are gorgeous. Great choice of soundtrack aiding the narrative of the silly seriousness of the situation.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Marcus Moshapalo, Executive Creative Director at VMLY&R

CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Ford Ranger ‘Unlimit Your World’ (Director’s Cut)
Darling Films | Zee Ntuli

Awarded by Tebogo Malope

‘There’s a time where we all wanted to shoot car commercials because they had a sense of scale, cinema and grandeur. Today we all want to shoot chicken. Zee manages to ingest a sense of scale in this commercial that gave me nostalgia. It’s cinema and once again shows us the brilliance of Zee. Well done’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Tebogo Malope, Director at The Star Film Company

CRAFT  MENTION (DIRECTION)
Chicken Licken ‘Easybucks Popcorn’
Egg Films | Adrian De Sa Garces

Awarded by Marcus Moshapalo

‘This piece had me chuckling. The cast (bear included) was perfect. The director’s comedic timing was great. The art direction and location superb.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Marcus Moshapalo, Executive Creative Director at VMLY&R

Tebogo Malope is a director at The Star Film Company
Tebogo is happiest when he is telling stories. He gets super thirsty for them. Whether quenching this thirst in front of a lens or animatedly re-enacting it in a board room, Tebogo has an exceptional ability to captivate an audience. And not just from the colossal amount of water the man drinks during a presentation. Either way, creativity and talent oozes from his pores. So try him for your next job to experience this first hand.
