Best in Craft awarded to Marc Algranti and Matthys Boshoff from The Star Film Company
March’s Craft entries slapped harder than…actually nevermind. This month’s IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards were judged by two of our industry’s absolute finest; Chief Creative Officer of Grey Africa, Fran Luckin and Director at Darling Films, Jeana Theron.
‘What are the IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards?’ Every month we team up with ad industry leaders to award the finest in South African film and production craft across these different categories: Direction, Editing, Cinematography, Animation and VFX, Online, Original Sound, Sound Design and Final Mix. It’s just another way that we make it ridiculously easy to stay up-to-date with who’s doing the best work in the country.
BEST IN CRAFT (Original Music)
Awarded by Fran Luckin
CRAFT MENTION (Original Music)
Awarded by Jeana Theron
South African Tourism ‘Live Again’
Marc Algranti Music | Marc Algranti
‘Comedian and musician Martin Mull (who?) once said writing about music is like dancing about architecture. Having chosen this piece as my Best of Craft, I now have the challenge of trying to pay tribute to it with my writing while somehow not exposing myself as a Philistine who couldn’t tell a crotchet from a crochet hook. Anyhow. Let me begin.
I like how the music viscerally evokes the South Africa we call home – without relying on familiar, predictable musical tropes. It manages to evoke familiarity (the South Africa we all know) without actually being familiar. If you know what I mean (dance, dance…). What else? I love the quality of the vocal (I’m a sucker for a falsetto) and I like how the ghost of the voice whispers through right at the beginning before the song begins in earnest, as if it’s a siren call to come to South Africa (I might well be making all that up though. I do get carried away sometimes. It’s why my English teacher loved me).
I like the way the ambient sound is worked into the rhythm.
I like the way the song weaves through different modes (is that the right word?) as the scenes change, and finally becomes house-y right at the end (“house-y” is definitely a musical term, I’m sure).
All in all, this is a really fresh musical approach in a category that too often relies on well-trodden musical tricks. And although the music is in itself beautiful and listenable-to in its own right, it never once upstages the mood and emotion of the ad.
Thank you (shimmies, takes bow).’

‘It’s a tricky thing to be briefed on an epic South African track for tourism, but Marc Algranti nailed it with the collaboration of Sun El Musician and Bongeziwe. The track stands out, haunting, beautiful, strangely familiar, a bit expected and yet totally unexpected at the same time. ‘

BEST IN CRAFT (Direction)
Awarded by Jeana Theron
Singapore Tourism ‘Together We Rise’
The Star Film Company | Matthys Boshoff
‘Choreographed professional dancers performing against state-of-the-art architecture might be hard to mess up, but it’s also hard to execute with the tasteful restraint of Matthys’s hand. I do not know Matthys personally, but I imagine his process involves a lovely marriage of intellect and heart. I imagine he thoughtfully, meticulously works out his compositions, which is evident in the clever reveals, the lighting changes and the barely perceptible post effects, and then he systematically builds these shots into a story following his instincts, which is seen in the effortless pace of the ad. I love the magical realism that ends the film, which makes for a lovely, perfectly unexpected close to the ad. ‘

CRAFT MENTION (VFX)
Awarded by Fran Luckin and Jeana Theron
MTN ‘Feet’
Sinister Studio | Christian van der Walt
‘When you watch this ad, you don’t come away with “Ooh, great VFX” uppermost in your mind. Which is exactly why I think it’s so great. It’s not that I don’t love a special effect. It’s that, in this case, the commercial is selling you a world that’s all about possibility, not impossibility. And so it absolutely and convincingly presents to you a world which is gorgeous, exciting, fast-paced and full of rhythm. And you don’t question a minute of it. You walk away from this commercial with a sense of how cool the world is. And that’s a testament to the artistry and science that happily effaces itself in the service of the idea. (I know I’m waxing lyrical here and could very well sound enormously pretentious – but I really like this ad. It reminds me of the time when commercials were happy to evoke a world of magic and imagination that didn’t operate at a purely rational level and didn’t have a voice-over reciting the strategy). Thank you for coming to my TED talk.’

‘Sinister Studio’s master of illusion Christian van der Walt gets my vote for MTN Feet. On an obvious level we can see the gorgeous 2d graphics that splash across the ad, the formidable 3d animations and the seamless transitions that are so tastefully executed. But for me, the genius lies in post that we FEEL, if we can’t see it – because I didn’t see it until the trick was revealed (watch the making of). Almost every shot has an imperceptible thump or a bump where the camera too reacts to the action. This detail adds to the concept, the grit and the feel of this spectacularly crafted ad. Kudos to Chris and the Sinister team.’
