‘What are the IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards?’ Every month we team up with ad industry leaders to award the finest in South African film and production craft across these different categories: Direction, Editing, Cinematography, Animation and SFX, Online, Original Sound, Sound Design and Final Mix. It’s just another way that we make it ridiculously easy to stay up-to-date with who’s doing the best work in the country.

BEST IN CRAFT (Direction)
KFC ’50th’
Darling Films | Zee Ntuli

Awarded by Kabelo Moshapalo and Tebza

‘The first piece that stands out is from the agency that I recently joined. The work speaks for itself. It is simply an enjoyable spot. It is beautifully shot with great casting and performances to match. It takes you on a journey that is refreshing with every watch. Zee nails every shot, from the very intimate, to the awkward, somewhat comedic, and that jolt of high energy at the end. Slick and clean camera work that builds anticipation at the right moments as well as the gradual suspense frame after frame, and then boom, so much excitement that rekindles that feeling of those moments that we all have missed since the whole world has turned upside down.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Kabelo Moshapalo, Chief Creative Officer Ogilvy Johannesburg

‘Once again Zee illustrates why he is a special talent, the pacing of this ad is perfect. The rhythm has the sensibility of a jazz song . You’re not sure what the next frame will give you but you know it’s gonna be delicious, sumptuous. The attention to detail that Zee has permeates throughout all his work and he takes it to another level on this. I’ve watched this ad numerous times but I’m delighted each time. Bravo Zee. Oh, and salute on that slick finger-licking moment.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Tebza, Director at The Star Film Company.

BEST IN CRAFT (Direction)
Soul Bites ‘Lotto’
Romance | Greg Gray

Awarded by Kabelo Moshapalo

‘All the spots, in this series, are pure fun and action-packed with so much story and attention to detail in such a short space of time. They’re visually rich and beautifully textured with really awesome performances. The Lotto one is my fav. Greg transports you distinctly into this very imaginative world, where every frame is humorous eye candy drawing you in and never missing a beat. Every watch is entertaining and leaves you yearning for more.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Kabelo Moshapalo, Chief Creative Officer Ogilvy Johannesburg

CRAFT MENTION (Direction)
Soul Bites ‘Loanshark’
Romance | Greg Gray

Awarded by Tebza

‘What more can you say about Greg; cinematic excellence, pitch-perfect comedy and a great cast. Greg has a way of making even the smallest ideas look epic. He gives scale to the mundane, and this is no different. A simple story but it feels like a movie. I’ve been a fan of Greg since I can remember and it surprises me how year in and year out he keeps making great work. His consistency is admirable and an example to all of us.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Tebza, Director at The Star Film Company.

CRAFT MENTION (Direction)
SANRAL ‘Linda Mbobo/Truck Driver’
OLAMUK | Mzi Kumalo and Michael Rodrigues

Awarded by Kabelo Moshapalo

‘This is an interesting piece of content and the difficulty of this type of storytelling is how it can easily go wrong. Capturing the stature and scale of the business side of things and juxtaposing that against the slice of life moments to add that human element. Mzi and Michael have done a great job with the attention to detail in ensuring that the contrasts worked out seamlessly and the end result is a good piece of content and repeatable format that one can build rich brand storytelling on.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Kabelo Moshapalo, Chief Creative Officer Ogilvy Johannesburg

IDIDTHAT GUEST JUDGES:

Kabelo Moshapalo is the Chief Creative Officer Ogilvy Johannesburg. He is a digital native and is responsible for driving creative excellence in modern marketing. Kabelo is a self-taught illustrator that traded his acrylic paints and paintbrushes for the digital canvas. He was born and raised in Soweto and has over 20 years of advertising and digital interactive experience and over the years he has led key DX (Digital Transformation) activity in all the places he has worked. In 2020, Kabelo was appointed to the Creative Circle AB InBev Braintrust, which seeks to elevate the standard of creativity and innovation across brands and respective agencies. An honour repeated in 2021. In 2015, he was featured in Destiny Man magazine’s Power of 40 List, which celebrates extraordinary men from all over South Africa under the age of 40. Kabelo has been a jury member at Clios, ADC New York, Lisbon International Advertising Festival, Loeries, and Bookmarks (Currently serving as the Jury Chair for the Marketing Panel); adjudicating work across diverse categories, ranging from Digital, Mobile, Social, Content, TV, Radio, Design, Experiential and Creative Effectiveness. His work has been awarded at major advertising festivals including Cannes Lions, ADC New York, The One Show, D&AD, Clios, and Webbys.

Tebza is a director at The Star Film Company. He is happiest when he is telling stories. He gets super thirsty for them. Whether quenching this thirst in front of a lens or animatedly re-enacting it in a board room, Tebza has an exceptional ability to captivate an audience. And not just from the colossal amount of water the man drinks during a presentation. Either way, creativity and talent oozes from his pores. So try him for your next job to experience this first hand.
