Best in Craft awarded to Telekom ‘Cyber Mobbing’ for Direction, Editing, and Cinematography

Let’s ignore that we’re halfway through 2020 and things are starting to resemble the final season of Game of Thrones, shall we? Okay good. And now please focus all your attention to our gorgeous industry’s mad skills. This month’s IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards were judged by the dragon slayers themselves; CCO and co-founder of The Odd Number Sibusiso Sitole and Editor at Left Post Production, Evy Katz.

‘What are the IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards?’ Every month we team up with ad industry leaders to award the finest in South African film and production craft across these different categories: Direction, Editing, Cinematography, Animation and SFX, Online, Original Sound, Sound Design and Final Mix. It’s just another way that we make it ridiculously easy to stay up-to-date with who’s doing the best work in the country.

Telekom ‘Cyber Mobbing’
03:07 | Kim Geldenhuys (Direction Craft)
Adam Bentel (Cinematography Craft) – Entered on behalf of Adam Bentel by 03:07 Films
Matthias Graatz (Editing Craft) – Entered on behalf of Matthias Graatz by 03:07 Films

Direction Comment: “This is a beautiful piece of film. It gently and empathetically tells the story of an individual being constantly harassed by internet trolls. The casting is authentic to the story, and the camera work brings us into the protagonist’s life in the most intimate way. Kim manages to tell a fairly prosaic journey, in quite a revealing, lonely and painful way. Each shot feels like a beautiful portrait, and enhances the rawness of the film without feeling too stylized. The subtly, nuance and honesty of this film, wrapped up in Jordan Rakei’s Midnight Mischief, makes for a moving film you could watch over and over again.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Sibusiso Sitole, CCO and co-founder of The Odd Number

Editing Comment: “This film is seemless, each shot flowing beautifully into the next. Nothing seems out of place of jarring. A very thoughtful and elegant edit that carries the emotion of the film without missing a beat.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Sibusiso Sitole, CCO and co-founder of The Odd Number

Cinematography Comment: “I love the way this film was shot. All the shots beautifully framed with the camera work making it all feel so personal and intimate. Just a beautiful piece of film.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Sibusiso Sitole, CCO and co-founder of The Odd Number

“Many brands have embraced timely causes over the years, but very few have done it with the sensitivity of Kim Geldenhuys’s piece for Telekom. Kim focuses on creating empathy, putting us near-wordlessly in the shoes of the young man and juxtaposing his day to day life with the abuse he is subjected to over the internet. The elements all work in perfect concert, which brings me to the cinematography and the edit. Adam Bentel’s lush imagery lends the spot a sense of intimacy while Matthias Graatz’s editing brings it all together, telling the story at an engaging pace, free of any gimmickry. A thoughtful, beautifully executed piece of work.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Evy Katz, Editor at Left Post Production

CRAFT SPECIAL MENTION (Direction)
Awarded by Evy Katz
VW South Africa ‘Baby’
Your Girlfriend | Trevor Clarence

“This zippy spot was my second choice for Best in Craft. Trevor takes an already stellar concept and elevates it with his well-honed comedic chops. The fun performances, colourful imagery, nicely-timed edit and joyous track combine to create a delightful piece that I’m sure everyone can relate to, parents and non-parents alike.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Evy Katz, Editor at Left Post Production

CRAFT SPECIAL MENTION (Direction)
Awarded by Sibusiso Sitole
Standard Bank ‘It Can Be’
Darling Films | Ross Garrett

“Easily the sexiest bank commercial I’ve seen in a very long time! Ross Garett is obviously in his element, the shots are a menagerie of grades, textures, colours and styles that work beautifully together to create a film that is a credible glimpse into a youthful state of being. The sheer attitude of the visuals, the voice-over, and the shots are so captivating you’re left wanting more. Well done to Standard Bank for being brave enough to make such a stunning piece of film.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Sibusiso Sitole, CCO and co-founder of The Odd Number

CRAFT SPECIAL MENTION (Direction)
Awarded by Sibusiso Sitole
Elo Zar ‘Bophelo’ (Music Video)
The Star Film Company | Tebza Malope

“This is not your typical music video. Shot and cast beautifully, this music video takes us on a journey of an unexpected showdown between two Gogos. I’ve always wondered when local filmmakers would begin to really explore fantastical genres in their work, and Tebza brings us a step closer to this reality. The visuals and the soundtrack work so well together, and the frames are beautifully captured. Of course, the two leads really make the film shine. I look forward to more of these conceptually considered pieces in the world of music videos.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Sibusiso Sitole, CCO and co-founder of The Odd Number

CRAFT SPECIAL MENTION (Music Supervision)
Awarded by Sibusiso Sitole & Evy Katz
MTN ‘Mathata Towers’
Marc Algranti Music | Marc Algranti (Music Supervision Craft)

“Negotiating the rights, getting the licensing and clearances to such a classic song and at an affordable rate couldn’t have been easy. Well done Marc!’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Sibusiso Sitole, CCO and co-founder of The Odd Number

“This ad has been in competition before but it wouldn’t be nearly as memorable without the lovely track, which is why I think Marc deserves a shoutout for successfully negotiating the deal that made it happen at a budget-friendly rate.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Evy Katz, Editor at Left Post Production
