Judges Comments by Eoin Welsh, Chief Creative Officer at Havas Worldwide:

BEST OF REEL: Sunu from Egg Films for Standard Bank Africa ‘Never Stop Moving Forward’.
“Hats off to Sunu for a genuinely engaging piece of filmmaking. The images are beautiful and thoughtfully sequenced, complimenting the script and the idea without overpowering it. The editing is dynamic and smartly paced. Kudos as well for the considerable achievement of avoiding African cliches, not only in the pictures but in the sound design as well. It made our continent feel as sexy and exciting as we Africans know it to be.”

SPECIAL MENTION: Alan Irvin from They Shoot Film for their charming ‘Evil Twin’ spot.
A lovely  little story that manages to feature cute kids and ice-cream without being sickly sweet. It’s a real art in this kind of storytelling to keep on the right side of the cheese line, and this spot pulls it off.

SPECIAL MENTION: Keith Rose from Velocity for Direction Craft and Saki Bergh and Keno Naidoo from Left Post Productions for their Editing Craft on the KFC ‘Music Playground’ spot.
“Special mentions for both editing and direction for KFC ‘Music Playground’ spot. The slick choreography between the two makes it both believable and entertaining.”

About Our Judge

Eoin Welsh was born in Ireland and raised in South Africa. What started as a copy career in property ads and office toilet supply brochures eventually turned into a job at Young & Rubicam. Many happy years later after stints at Ogilvy and FCB, the opportunity arose to co-found a Johannesburg office for King James. After successfully helping run this business, The Lowe Worldwide Group, lured him back to help make theirs better. First at Lowe Worldwide Johannesburg and then Lowe Prague. Today his home is Havas Worldwide Johannesburg as Chief Creative Officer. When he’s not making ads, Eoin has three great loves – family, guitars and Arsenal Football Club. He apparently also likes playing the harmonica, but nobody else likes it when he does.
