South Africa’s D&AD results are in, here’s the work.

South Africa picked up a handful of shortlist recognitions at this year’s D&AD Awards, with a Wood Pencil awarded to Accenture Song for Allan Gray’s ‘A Seat at The Table’. Love this work, go team! And while it wasn’t the country’s biggest year at D&AD, getting shortlisted here still means the work stood out among some of the best creative entries in the world.

D&AD Awards remain one of the industry’s toughest benchmarks for creative excellence across design, advertising, craft, and production. Here’s a quick look at the different D&AD Pencil levels:

Shortlist: Work that demonstrates merit, worthy of recognition and in the top echelon of entries. It’s awarded in all categories in the first instance.
Wood Pencil: The best of the year in advertising, design, craft, culture and impact.
Graphite Pencil: For stand-out work that rises above the rest, worthy of consideration for a Yellow Pencil.
Yellow Pencil: The iconic D&AD Yellow Pencil, awarded only to outstanding work that achieves true creative excellence.
White Pencil: For exceptional projects that use the power of creativity to drive behavioural, environmental, societal or policy change.
Black Pencil: The ultimate creative accolade, reserved for ground-breaking work. Only a handful of these are awarded each year, if any.

If you or your company worked on any of these projects and your credits aren’t listed, it’s probably because you’re not an IDIDTHAT member… which feels like a bit of a miss, considering you’re clearly doing some of the best work out there. Don’t pull a Van Gogh and wait to get famous later. Get seen now, by the people who matter. Take a look at our membership options or drop us a line [email protected] to get signed up and we’ll make sure your work gets the spotlight it deserves.

WISH I IDID THAT: May / June / July / August 2025

We all know the feeling when a piece of work drops and you think, “Damn, I wish I did that.” Instead of pretending we’re above it, we decided to lean in and turn those envy tingles into something worth celebrating. So we gathered some of South Africa’s sharpest creative minds, handed them some of the best work agencies have released over the last few months, and asked them to pick the pieces they wish they did. Here’s to giving credit where it’s due and maybe inspiring a little healthy jealousy along the way.

Spitfire at 13, a production company that grew up its own way

Thirteen years is a long time in advertising. It’s even longer in production. Which is why Spitfire’s teenage birthday lands with real weight: a fresh reel, a wall of awards, a new generation of women coming up through the ranks, and some of its strongest creative years to date.

Robin de Jager, the Triple Story Content director behind the film heating up the South African film industry

Before the local industry had even seen a frame, Robin de Jager’s new film ‘Lil_ith’ was already making noise internationally. It premiered at the Oscar- and BAFTA-qualifying Odense International Film Festival and QFest St. Louis, a rare feat for a South African indie, especially one made entirely by bootstrap grit and obsessive care. Combine that with his growing commercial portfolio and the production backing of Triple Story Content, and it’s exactly why Robin should be on your director radar.

IDIDTHAT Monthly Craft Awards

Find out who’s doing the best work in South Africa. Every month we team up with industry leaders to award South Africa’s best in Production Craft. Huge thanks to our recent guest judges who’ve taken the time to judge IDIDTHAT Craft Awards. Look how sexy they are in these black and white pictures we put up – FYI we used the ‘Inkwell’ filter.

Best in Film Craft: May 2019

Every month iDidTht.com teams up with an industry leader to award South Africa’s best in Film Craft. This month, the CCO of Grey Africa, Fran Luckin, lends us her years of experience and talent by stepping up to the judging plate. More importantly though, she makes us look damn cool, because guys, it’s Fran flippen Luckin! 😍

Best in Film Craft: April 2019

Every month iDidTht.com teams up with an industry leader to award South Africa’s best in Film Craft. Huge shout-out to our judge: Executive Creative Director of Ogilvy Cape Town, Chairperson of the Loerie Awards, 2nd Most Admired Creative Leader in Cape Town for 2 years-running and winner of numerous awards including a Cannes Grand Prix… please step aside Arya Stark, and let's give it up for Tseliso Rangaka! *crowd goes wild*

Best in Film Craft: March 2019

Every month iDidTht.com teams up with an industry leader to award South Africa’s best in Film Craft. This month’s Guest Judge was John Davenport. When not polishing his roughly 20 Cannes Lions awards he’s being the badass CCO at Havas, a political writer, philanthropist, and sculptor… oh, and he also happened to put the ‘Davenport’ in Ireland/Davenport. 🔥If he wasn’t so damn nice we’d think he’s showing off.
