South Africa’s D&AD results are in, here’s the work.

South Africa picked up a handful of shortlist recognitions at this year’s D&AD Awards, with a Wood Pencil awarded to Accenture Song for Allan Gray’s ‘A Seat at The Table’. Love this work, go team! And while it wasn’t the country’s biggest year at D&AD, getting shortlisted here still means the work stood out among some of the best creative entries in the world.

D&AD Awards remain one of the industry’s toughest benchmarks for creative excellence across design, advertising, craft, and production. Here’s a quick look at the different D&AD Pencil levels:

Shortlist: Work that demonstrates merit, worthy of recognition and in the top echelon of entries. It’s awarded in all categories in the first instance.
Wood Pencil: The best of the year in advertising, design, craft, culture and impact.
Graphite Pencil: For stand-out work that rises above the rest, worthy of consideration for a Yellow Pencil.
Yellow Pencil: The iconic D&AD Yellow Pencil, awarded only to outstanding work that achieves true creative excellence.
White Pencil: For exceptional projects that use the power of creativity to drive behavioural, environmental, societal or policy change.
Black Pencil: The ultimate creative accolade, reserved for ground-breaking work. Only a handful of these are awarded each year, if any.

If you or your company worked on any of these projects and your credits aren’t listed, it’s probably because you’re not an IDIDTHAT member… which feels like a bit of a miss, considering you’re clearly doing some of the best work out there. Don’t pull a Van Gogh and wait to get famous later. Get seen now, by the people who matter. Take a look at our membership options or drop us a line [email protected] to get signed up and we’ll make sure your work gets the spotlight it deserves.

Marketer Spotlight: Star Kachisa, Head of Marketing, Spotify Sub-Saharan Africa

As Head of Marketing for Spotify Sub-Saharan Africa, Star Kachisa leads work across some of the most culturally layered markets in the world. She’s clear that the job isn’t to ‘make movies’, but to make work that earns attention, drives behaviour, and actually sells product. Spoiler alert: it’s also really good work. So we sat down with Star to find out how that work gets made, and what really matters along the way.

Markus Wormstorm and Biblo.tv, a direct line to Africa’s musical underground

Composer and music supervisor Markus Wormstorm launched Biblo in 2012 to solve a familiar industry frustration. Directors and editors were stuck choosing between generic library music or culturally relevant tracks that couldn’t be licensed. Biblo emerged as a third option - access to contemporary African sound, built to move seamlessly from offline edit to final delivery.

Q&A with Giant Films director Paul Ward on process, story and creative restraint in branded storytelling

In this Q&A, Giant Films’ director Paul Ward unpacks his process, his approach to storytelling, and how to navigate brand involvement without letting it overpower the human story. In a one-on-one conversation, we dig into the making of ‘The Philipstown WireCar Grand Prix’, a deeply moving, beautifully considered film that stays grounded while still feeling ambitious in scale and imagination.

IDIDTHAT Monthly Craft Awards

Find out who’s doing the best work in South Africa. Every month we team up with industry leaders to award South Africa’s best in Production Craft. Huge thanks to our recent guest judges who’ve taken the time to judge IDIDTHAT Craft Awards. Look how sexy they are in these black and white pictures we put up – FYI we used the ‘Inkwell’ filter.

Best in Film Craft: November 2019

November’s iDidTht Craft Awards were judged by the highly Instagrammable ECD of King James Group JHB, Graeme Jenner. Born in England (but we won’t hold that against him), Graeme moved to SA, was raised in Secunda and became a Graphic Designer in Joburg. Since then he has made his mark on the industry in countless ways, including being the Founder of King James II. An honour and a privilege to have you Graeme!

Best in Film Craft: October 2019

Creative Director at Grey Africa/Liquid, Steph van Niekerk once went on stage 15 times on a single night at the Loeries. She’s one of SA’s most awarded creatives in film, but it’s time that people know that the real talent lies with her cat, word-renowned film critic and enthusiast, Dmitri Moses, who will be joining her as co-judge this month. Thank you Steph and Moses. 🙌🐾

Best in Film Craft: September 2019

Every month iDidTht teams up with an industry superstar to award South Africa’s best in Craft. For the month of September, we were joined by none other than Neo Mashigo. His credits are endless so in the interest of word count, here’s the highlights reel: CCO for at M&C Saatchi Group, former Chairperson & current board member of Loeries, Co-Founder of 'I See a Different You', on the Executive Committee of the Creative Circle, and basically won all the awards including Grand Prix at Cannes, legend. Thank you Neo, thank you!
