Meet South Africa’s Cannes Lions Jury 2026

Being invited to judge at Cannes Lions is one of the highest honours in our industry. It’s recognition from your global peers that your perspective deserves a seat at the table. But it also comes with enormous responsibility. These are the people entrusted with evaluating the world’s best creative work and helping decide what excellence looks like for the year ahead. No pressure…

This year, South Africa has 31 industry folks participating in the Cannes Lions judging process, spanning both the shortlisting juries and the awarding juries. Leading the way is Gugu Mthembu as Jury President for Creative Business Transformation. She is joined on awarding juries by some of South Africa’s most respected industry voices, including Tseliso Rangaka judging the coveted Titanium Lions and Suhana Gordhan helping award the Glass: The Lion for Change.

Between IDIDTHAT & Nedbank’s Jury Duty and the South African Creative Showcase, we’ve had the chance to spend time with a number of this year’s jurors as they shared knowledge and prepared for the conversations ahead. So we know they’re heading into those global jury rooms ready to do South Africa proud.

From marketers and strategists to filmmakers, designers, creative leaders and founders, they will bring South African perspectives into some of the industry’s most important conversations. We couldn’t be prouder of the group representing us this year.

Let’s meet South Africa’s Cannes Lions jury for 2026. And if you spot one of them in Cannes, buy them a drink. They’ve earned it.

Justin Gomes 🇿🇦

Founder and Chief Creative Officer, Bananas

As a young child, Justin’s parents denied him a Superman suit. Undeterred, his Christmas list that year featured blue pyjamas, red socks, red underpants and a red towel. But most importantly, Justin discovered what it felt like to solve a problem using the power of creativity. He’s made a living out of it ever since – and sometimes, not in red underpants.

Justin began his career in South Africa as a copywriter, creating campaigns like Dulux “Any Colour You Can Think Of” which went on to be named SA Campaign Of The Decade. After working in Paris and New York, he returned to SA in 2005 to co-found the creatively lauded independent agency FoxP2. It became the first small agency in the history of South African advertising to win the overall SA Financial Mail Agency Of The Year Award. In 2025, Justin co-founded the independent agency Bananas . Their first ad – “Let there be Cake” for KFC Thailand – won a Film Cannes Gold, South Africa’s first in decades. Bananas finished the overall SA Creative rankings for 2025 in third position after its first year and has helped re-ignite the independent agency renaissance in South Africa.

Neo Makhele 🇿🇦

Chief Strategy Officer, Ogilvy South Africa
Creative Strategy Lions Judge

I am Chief Strategy Officer at Ogilvy South Africa, with over 20 years of experience in advertising and brand strategy across Africa. My work sits at the intersection of creativity, culture, and effectiveness, using strategy as the connective tissue between human insight and business growth.

My point of view is anchored in culture‑first creative strategy, informed by my academic and professional work across African markets. I believe the most powerful brand ideas bridge the rational gap between System 1 and System 2 thinking — aligning emotional instinct with deliberate choice through cultural intelligence.

This belief was deepened through my MBA in Creative Leadership at Steinbeis‑Hochschule University in Berlin, where my thesis focused on frugal innovation across five key African markets, examining how innovation emerges from sub-cultural needs to ensure access, relevance, and scale.

I believe every brand carries an inherent cultural quotient — a measure of whether it exists below culture, within culture, or above culture. This quotient shapes a brand’s ability to create category‑breaking work and to build meaningful connections in consumers’ preferred cultural spaces.

In community‑oriented, creator‑led markets such as South Africa, cultural intelligence is a critical strategic growth driver — enabling brands to move beyond communication and into genuine cultural participation.

Pride of Africa remains one of her favourite projects. The organisation wanted to expand its purpose beyond South Africa’s borders and take up the fight for all voiceless LGBTQ+ Africans, thereby becoming the first local Pride march to represent a whole continent. To do so, it needed to rebrand itself from the single-city Johannesburg Pride to the first ever pan-African LGBTQ+ platform: Pride of Africa. The brand logo was turned into the first ever all-African rainbow flag, distilled from each of the 54 African countries flags. The result was an adaptive symbol as diverse as each country’s pride community, and as unified as their fight for free expression. She loves this piece as it used design to as a vehicle to make a positive transformative impact in the lives of Africa’s LGBTQ+ community. The project was awarded a Bronze Cannes Lions.

Tseliso Rangaka is the Chief Creative Officer of Accenture Song South Africa. He has spent more than two decades shaping some of the world’s most iconic brands, helping them find their voice and tell stories that connect. From Volkswagen and Audi to Coca-Cola, KFC, and Anheuser-Busch InBev, his work has driven brand love, cultural impact, and commercial success.

A journalism graduate from Rhodes University, Rangaka brings a storyteller’s sensibility to creativity, balancing craft, insight, and execution to create work that resonates. His leadership has played a pivotal role at agencies such as FCB South Africa, Ogilvy, and WPP Studio X Africa, where he helped elevate brands and inspire teams to push beyond the expected. As Chief Creative Officer at FCB, he was instrumental in the agency being named No.2 Creative Agency in Africa (WARC Report 2022), and at WPP Studio X, he helped Coca-Cola strengthen its creative impact across the continent.

His work has earned Cannes Lions and Loerie Grands Prix, One Show Pencils, and D&AD Awards, and his influence extends beyond the work itself. A regular presence on international award juries, he has served as jury president at Cannes Lions and D&AD, as well as Chairperson of the Loerie Awards.

A constant learner, Rangaka believes creativity thrives on curiosity, exploration, and a willingness to question the obvious. When he’s not herding tigers, Tseliso spends his time with one wife, two children, and a dog.
