BEST IN CRAFT (DIRECTION)
KFC ‘Anything For The Taste’
Romance | Greg Gray
Awarded by Tian van den Heever & Rob van den Bragt
CRAFT MENTION (EDITING)
KFC ‘Anything For The Taste’
Deliverance Post | Ricky Boyd
Awarded by Rob van den Bragt
‘KFC’s new “Anything for the taste” hero content piece (AKA “ad”) went viral in the agency circles on the day of its release with good reason. It is two and a half minutes of filmic joy. Everything is doing all of the things. The performances are charming and funny without ever going near overplayed or hokey. The car shots featuring the iconic Cressida are immaculate. The lighting is lovely and the colouring is delicious. The product shots are mouthwatering and effortlessly integrated into the narrative. The splitscreens are sublime and the edit is beat-perfect. Even the titles pay their rent in full. And it has a killer track. It’s a sweet, retro-futurist, crowd-pleasing, visual smorgasbord that more than lives up to the hype. Greg Gray directed the pants off this one. ‘

Comment on Direction: ‘This 2:31 true crime ad is so beautifully and wittingly told it has you glued to the screen. The simple misdemeanour at first, the steadily increasing pace, the lengthening criminal record for “Mr.Molapo”, the happy nostalgic summer holiday music track and the wonderful ending, manages to deliver us a full-blown entertaining story in just two and half minutes. Chocolate Tribe did work on the visual effects for this ad, but it is simply not possible to abstain from voting for this wonderful KFC commercial. The wonderful casting, well-directed performances, warm soulful photography, balanced timing, and so on is Greg Gray at his best. Definitely worthy of the IDIDTHT Craft Best. Well done!’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Rob van den Bragt, Animation & VFX Supervisor / Head of Production at Chocolate Tribe
Comment on Editing: ‘To further highlight my absolute appreciation for KFC’s “Anything for the Taste”. It is hard to not also give Ricky Boyd from Deliverance the Craft Mention for the amazing work he did on Romance Films’ KFC masterpiece. As mentioned above, the timing and interplay between visuals, music and split screen and pacing are sublime. Hats off to you, Ricky.’

CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
The Unlimited ‘Unmute and Damn The Consequence’
Bioscope Films | Kyla Philander
Awarded by Tian van den Heever
‘I am really enjoying the series of “The Unlimited” films that have been coming out. The whole campaign has a distinctive theme and aesthetic that holds all the work together without any of it becoming too derivative or samey-samey. My favourite “The Unlimited” piece this month is called “Unmute and damn the consequence”, and it was directed by Kyla Philander. They managed to create a spot where the execution is as fierce as its subject. It’s cinematic and arty but still completely approachable. The camera language is simultaneously intimate and respectful. Each frame is a work of art in and of itself, and when strung all together, they create a piece that’s visually emotive and genuinely moving.’

CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
The Unlimted ‘Unbuillied By The Likes Of You’
Bioscope Films | Fausto Becatti
Awarded by Rob van den Bragt
‘Fausto Becatti from Bioscope Films was already awarded last month for the amazing graphic “The Unlimited” series trailer, but after watching the “Unbullied By The Likes Of You”by Fausto Becatti, it grabbed my attention. The twisted, warped and glitchy film really made me sit up and think about the realities of bullying and the strength required to fight back and rise above it. Being a father of 3 wonderful mix race children this type of reality hits you hard. The only way to counteract this is by exposing this often hidden evil and by supporting those who deal with it. My greatest respect to everyone who worked on this campaign. And yes, it deserves a IDIDTHAT Craft Mention (Direction)!’
