Best in Craft awarded to Fausto Becatti from Bioscope and Jason Fialkov from Groundglass

This month’s IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards were judged by Ana Rocha, Executive Creative Director at VMLY&R  and Amy Allais, Director and Co-Founder of Ola! Films. Congratulations to our esteemed Best in Crafters for August, the dashing Jason Fialkov from Groundglass and Fausto Becatti from Bioscope.

‘What are the IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards?’ Every month we team up with ad industry leaders to award the finest in South African film and production craft across these different categories: Direction, Editing, Cinematography, Animation and VFX, Online, Original Sound, Sound Design and Final Mix. It’s just another way that we make it ridiculously easy to stay up-to-date with who’s doing the best work in the country.

BEST IN CRAFT (Direction)

The Unlimited ‘Unlimit Your Life’
Bioscope Films | Fausto Becatti

Awarded by Ana Rocha

‘The textured landscape and journey the piece takes you through as a viewer, is so rewarding – beautifully crafted and linked scenarios, bold cast, the framing of every scene, the transition between real in camera moments to boldly illustrated animations, an empowering voice and track bringing you in – all the layers, making you want to watch more, in true Fausto style. Like an open door, you need to walk through to reveal the next step. It draws you in, and you can’t help but love every second of it and watch to see what’s next.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Ana Rocha, Executive Creative Director at VMLY&R

BEST IN CRAFT (Direction)

Klipdrift ‘Friends With Purpose – Biking Bandits’
Groundglass | Jason Fialkov

Awarded by Amy Allais

‘Simple, honest, sincere, beautiful, heartwarming. This stood out amongst the entries for its simplicity. I love the fact that Jason refrained from using heavy-handed gimmicks or trendy techniques. It was so palpably a labour of love; the connection between the subjects was captured in a genuine, un-staged way that requires a really sensitive hand. This is the type of work where being a director / DP provides an immeasurable advantage. There is a lot of doccie-style content work out there in this vein that lacks substance and cohesion and is, frankly, boring. These subjects breathe and vibrate with life. This story hangs together seamlessly, and brought a tear to my eye.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Amy Allais, Director at Ola! Films

CRAFT  MENTION (DIRECTION)

MTN Springboks ‘5G Your Life’
Plank | Peter Pohorsky

Awarded by Amy Allais

‘The whole thing is flawlessly executed. We’ve all been tasked with having to get non-actors to act and it is frequently cringe-worthy, so kudos to Peter for the on-point performances from actual Springbok rugby players.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Amy Allais, Director at Ola! Films

CRAFT  MENTION (ORIGINAL MUSIC, SOUND DESIGN & FINAL MIX)

PPS Insurance ‘Finding the Forgotten Graduate’ (Campaign)
Howard Audio | Adam Howard

Awarded by Ana Rocha and Amy Allais

‘Finding the Forgotten Graduate. Adam’s amazing sound design and composition creates the sublime feeling of having read a great book, so much craft in shaping the story, in the warm texture of the narrator…beautiful.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Ana Rocha, Executive Creative Director at VMLY&R

‘This is such important work. Our history will go untold unless research like this is done, and it’s a rare and beautiful thing to see it presented in such an engrossing way. The actual idea behind the project is inspired, and the website is beautifully put together. The music and sound design underpins the stories in a way that doesn’t draw attention to itself but is so effective. It really brought these forgotten, inspiring figures to life.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Amy Allais, Director at Ola! Films

IDIDTHAT GUEST JUDGES:

Ana is the ECD at VMLY&R Cape Town. ‘Ideas that connect with people are why I’ve been in this game for almost 20yrs. When brands stand for something, they change the way we engage with products and have a knock-on effect on the way we live our lives. Partnering with brands to create great solutions through creativity, is what it’s all about for me. I have worked with local & global brands, from FMCG to Auto, Mobile & Tech and Financial, leading the creative in a way that is relevant and becomes part of audiences’ lives.’ Says Ana. As ECD at VMLY&R Cape Town, some of her recent partner brand wins include Google Africa, Uber, Strettons Gin. Ana is an Art Director and maker at heart, always curious, and loves experimenting, which lead her to become an amateur street artist, creating “granny grafitti” as part of a collab called @Xx_CPT on IG. As a traveller (in post-pandemic spring), and lover of good food, she can’t wait for the time we finally figure out how to teleport.

Amy Allais – director and co-owner of Ola! Films. Loves to stylise her content. Often irreverent. But precise. Always precise. Amy’s vast experience, from epic choreographed dance spots, to comedy performance and an inadvertent focus on kids and babies, has taken her across the world and has contributed immensely to the diverse scope of work created by Ola to date. She is sought-after globally. Her love of design and fashion mean that she always grabs the opportunity to stylise her work – she’s driven by precision, with a healthy dose of irreverence thrown in.
