Best in Craft awarded to Slim from Darling Films
This month’s IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards were judged by the superbly talented all-seeing all-knowing oracles that are Jacquie Mullany, Creative Director at HelloFCB+ and Grant De Sousa, Director at They. Congratulations to Slim from Darling Films for his skillfully crafty work on Chicken Licken *clapping wildly.
‘What are the IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards?’ Every month we team up with ad industry leaders to award the finest in South African film and production craft across these different categories: Direction, Editing, Cinematography, Animation and VFX, Online, Original Sound, Sound Design and Final Mix. It’s just another way that we make it ridiculously easy to stay up-to-date with who’s doing the best work in the country.
BEST IN CRAFT (DIRECTION)
Chicken Licken ‘Soul Sisters’
Darling | Slim
Awarded by Jacquie Mullany & Grant De Sousa
‘My eyes, MY EYES! This is truly an orgasmic experience of the senses. I was blown away by the level of craft in this piece. From the moody grade to the music that got me chair dancing like I had them ants in my pants. Top-class choreography, casting, effects… And the timing – it had me wondering when it would end and desperately hoping it never would. Well done, Slim. Hats off.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Jacquie Mullany, Creative Director at HelloFCB+
‘Choreography is tough at the best of times. But to pull it off in this manner with wire rigs is no mean feat. Stylistically and tonally it’s spot-on for the brand without feeling too forced. It’s well cast and I love the mixed use of actual dancers and normal humans. The adam’s apple jiving gets me every time. The spot takes me back to the Fatboy Slim “Push the Tempo” music video. Which is the biggest compliment I can pay the director.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Grant De Sousa, Director at They
Marc Algranti Music | Marc Algranti
Awarded by Jacquie Mullany
‘This music perfectly brought the piece to life. Brilliantly remixed and edited, it pulled me in and gave me all the feels. The music really was the hero for me.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Jacquie Mullany, Creative Director at HelloFCB+
CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
KFC ‘Whodunnit?’
Spitfire Films | Katlego Baaitse
Awarded by Grant De Sousa
‘I love this campaign and I especially love how the supporting work around it was no afterthought. With limited resources (I think it’s maybe 3 locations and one lead in total) I can feel the director working here. Performance nuances are very funny and love the subtle digs at the other brands. It’s tongue in cheek and I feel this campaign will shake this category up.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Grant De Sousa, Director at They
‘The energy of this piece is great. Had a bit of a “Smack my B*tch Up” music video feel. For a renewal on the brand it’s super important to get the energy right. The editing on this certainly delivers that. I love the timings and clever breaks in the pacing. The commercial also has multiple layers of VFX which the Editor had to also visualise and integrate into the offline which I’m sure took some imagination.’
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Grant De Sousa, Director at They
