Post house The Syndicate takes big steps with new space, growing team and top producer

Over the past year, The Syndicate has evolved from a solo-led edit suite into a fully-fledged post-production house with serious weight behind it. Now operating from a new space in Joburg on 4th Avenue in Parkhurst, with Gugu Radebe on board as producer and three additional editors on the roster, and a newly launched website, the company can confidently take on full post from offline through to grade, online, animation and sound. For a team that’s been heads-down building, that’s quite a lot to drop on the industry in one go.

When Nic Goodwin founded The Syndicate in 2020, the intention was to build a post production facility that is agile and committed to the craft. The idea was simple: “Keep the structure lean, collaborate with the right people, and let the craft lead, and that philosophy remains, but the scale has shifted. And that’s where Gugu comes in,” says Nic.

“I didn’t look anywhere else,” Nic says. “Gugu understands film directors. She understands production. And she genuinely loves the people part of this industry. That combination is powerful. She’s already been so transformative for the business.”

“I’ve always wanted to be closer to the part where the story really comes together,” Gugu says. “Offline, sound, colour – the emotion of it all. That’s where the heartbeat is for me.”

What began as a single editor working independently has grown in roster : Nic Goodwin and James O’Sullivan on an exclusive basis and Ndivhu Mushanganyisi and Shelby Ncube on a freelance basis.

James O’Sullivan, The Syndicate’s latest full-time signing, is a compelling storyteller with a masterful understanding of performance, earning him a 2nd place ranking at the 2025 Loeries. Ndivhu Mushanganyisi (freelance) has built a reputation for commitment to honest storytelling, making her a formidable talent across both commercials and documentaries, where her work has earned multiple awards. Shelby Ncube (freelance) is widely recognised for his trailblazing approach to editing, paired with a quiet confidence in his craft. Together, this lineup positions The Syndicate among the country’s top-tier post-production players.

The Parkhurst space has two multi-functional edit suites where the team can edit and run offline, online and grade sessions with creative teams, with the option to stream sessions both in and out of the studio when needed, creating a post workflow that accommodates a global industry. For grade, online, audio, animation and VFX, The Syndicate works with trusted collaborators that are the right fit for the job.

“We’ve always been obsessed with the alchemy of post production,” Nic says. “Now we’ve built the team and the infrastructure to really push that as far as it can go.”

We love it when good things happen to good people. If you’re in Jozi, give them a shout at 4th Avenue in Parkhurst.
