”These 2 pieces really stood out in their ability to incite and capture such powerful, emotionally human stories. They are testament to the director’s sensitivity and awareness to allow the cast (non-actors), the space to “go there”, eliciting authentic vulnerability – especially when camera, crew and gear are invading such intimate moments.

The bold choice of framing (I’m assuming conceived for the live event’s stage format), really stood out and immediately captured my interest as a visual statement, quite unexpected and unique to the campaign of individual stories.”

Kyla Philander raises the voice of the people in a series of one minute films for the Gates Foundation “We Can’t Stop at Almost”.

At a time when life-changing humanitarian funding is being halted, these explorations act as a moment of reflection – observing the starkness and devastation of our reality, while reminding us of humanity’s immense achievements in medicine, feeding schemes, and community work.

We hear the stories of the Oudo family in Kenya, who lost their baby to malaria. Counsellors Abosh and Kungi, from Cape Town, South Africa, who talk about their experiences navigating working the public health care system while life-changing funding is being withdrawn. We meet Doreen, born with HIV in Kenya, who, through her social media presence and initiative ‘I Am A Beautiful Story’, has become a leading advocate for HIV awareness and anti-stigma efforts, and Fy, a social media influencer and youth advocate for immunisation against polio in Madagascar.

This collection of films is a central part of the Goalkeepers 2025 Event ‘We can’t stop at Almost’ for The Gates Foundation.
