South Africa’s #WorkToWatch judged by Tseliso Rangaka and Jacques Massardo.

#WorkToWatch features the best work by top South African Agencies in South Africa. Every month we team up with a top local Executive Creative Director and their nominated equally prominent international Creative Director to judge the work. Thank you to Tseliso Rangaka, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy & Mather Cape Town, and Jacques Massardo, Creative Director at Ogilvy Amsterdam, for selecting July’s #WorkToWatch for South Africa’s leading agencies.

Judges Comments by Tseliso Rangaka, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy & Mather Cape Town.

Telkom ‘Boltspeed’ by DDB South Africa
“Using children in advertising is a pain. Most brands don’t know how to do it so that it doesn’t end up cheesy. This Telkom spot featuring Usain Bolt and a well-cast boy as his lightning quick protégé is a rare exception to that. I love the cinematography and the soundtrack gives the ad extra edge.”

Ster-Kinekor #OpenEyes by FoxP2
“This is one of my favourite pieces of work out there at the moment. It has an honest simplicity that doesn’t overplay the heartstrings harp. I also commend Ster-Kinekor for stepping back and letting this heartwarming story take the lead. It’s a great way to remind people of the magic that is cinema.”

Student Flights ‘Travel before it’s not fun anymore’ by TBWA Hunt Lascaris Jhb
“The Student Flights campaign is a great example of the kind of radio we should be hearing more of. The spots are clever without getting overly intellectual. They are also extremely entertaining. Very often we tend to over produce radio but that’s not the case here. I like how they use a simple audio device to paint a really vivid and quite scary picture of what it means to grow old.”

DSTV ‘Don’t Sound the Same’ by Ogilvy & Mather Jhb
“What can I say, I’m a sucker for a group of guys singing movie soundtracks out of tune. Yes, the spots are silly but they are also really funny and I get what they’re trying to tell me. I can also clearly see “the guys at the robots” in my mind. That’s got to count for something right?”

Student Flights ‘Holiday Packing’ by TBWA Hunt Lascaris Jhb
“It’s always great to see an insight that keeps yielding fresh and entertaining executions. It’s been a while since we saw the first TV ads in this campaign, but the work is still very rewarding. The same goes for the 3 ‘Travel before it’s not fun anymore’ radio spots which further demonstrate the strength of the insight by stretching it into another medium.”

Volkswagen ‘On the Road’ by Ogilvy & Mather Cape Town
“A simple story beautifully told. Yes, it’s another road trip commercial, but it’s more than that too. It’s South Africa’s journey that’s also context here and kudos to the brand for touching on that narrative with a sense of optimism and authenticity.”

Cape Talk #BreakTheMould by Y&R South Africa
“The problem of gender stereotypes is firmly in the spotlight, and with renewed focus, now that the boss of Saatchi and Saatchi has resigned over his senseless comments on gender diversity. This small but strong idea has popped up in my social feed a few times. It immediately resonated with me, having recently unpacked a few suitcases of toys with my two young daughters.”

Ster Kinekor #OpenEyes by FoxP2
“Restoring the sight of a visually impaired person is a wonderful gift to be able to give. This piece of work for Ster Kinekor connects the brand to something far bigger. I do hope that the initial good work that’s been done in taking this first step gains traction, so that this can become a sustainable and ongoing initiative.”

Castrol ‘Magnatec Vuvuliser’ by Ogilvy & Mather Cape Town
“I was involved in this work so I was at first hesitant to mention it. But I’m 13000 kms away from home now, and with a little distance and perspective I still think it’s strong.”
