FEATURED WORK

AWARDED: CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Metropolitan Funeral Cover ‘Gogo Vivian’
Spitfire Films | Katlego Baaitse

IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Jessie Zinn, Director at Bioscope Films
May 2026

Jessie’s comment: “This felt like a mini South African episodic show in the best way. So charming, funny and understated, with Gogo Vivian eating up her role as the family diva. I would absolutely watch a full ‘Succession’-esque South African film built around this family, ideally with at least one episode dedicated entirely to the reading of the will, where someone is accusing someone else of stealing all of the Tupperware. In a feed full of flashy tricks it was so refreshing to come across a spot that simply breathes. The dialogue lands, the performances feel real, and the humour is specific without feeling cartoonish. A beautifully directed piece that understands something very simple and very hard to fake: character is craft.”

AWARDED: CRAFT MENTION (CINEMATOGRAPHY)
BIC ‘Chef’ (Director’s Cut)
Josh Levi (Entered on behalf of Josh Levi by Spitfire Films)

IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Zee Ntuli, Director at Darling Films
December 2025

Zee’s comment: “With BIC, ‘Chef’, it would have been very easy to chase something like The Bear. Go frenetic. Long lenses. Constant pressure. That language is right there for the taking. Instead, Josh and the team pulled back and employed restraint.

The piece feels cared for. You can feel the hands on it. It’s naturalistic. Tactile.”

AWARDED: BEST IN CRAFT (DIRECTION)
Spitfire Films  | Katlego Baaitse
Spotify ‘Spotify Radar (Thakzin)’

IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Saf Sindi, Founder & CCO at Bananas South Africa
October 2025

Saf’s comment: ‘This piece of film translates the artist’s music visually and beautifully. It could easily have been just another doccie-style endorsement, but instead, every frame mirrors the syncopated rhythm and experimental pulse of 3 Step Afro House. The texture, color grading, and lensing choices build a world perfectly suited to Thakzin’s story.

Nothing feels manufactured. It’s not trying to prove it’s African, or cool, or cinematic, it just is. That kind of quiet confidence is rare, especially in branded work.’

AWARDED: CRAFT MENTION (ONLINE VFX CRAFT)
Spitfire Films | Fresh VFX and Michael Langer (Entered on behalf of Fresh VFX and Michael Langer by Spitfire Films)
SAT (South African Tourism) ‘South Africa Awaits – Come Find Your Joy’

IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Melusi Tshabalala, Executive Creative Director at VML
April 2025

Melusi’s comment: ‘The visual effects elevate an otherwise straight story, giving it a sense of magic and joy. The effects are expertly-done and captivating.’

AWARDED: CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Spitfire Films | Katlego Baaitse
SAB ‘Don’t Accept Whatever’
IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Brendan Hoffmann, ECD at Joe Public Cape Town
August 2023

Brendan’s comment: ‘Katlego brought this story to life really well with great performances, comedic timing, clever titles and some interesting camera transitions. That ice skater gets me every time.’

AWARDED: CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Spitfire Films | Katlego Baaitse
KFC ‘Whodunnit?’
IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Grant De Sousa, Director at They
October 2022

Grant’s comment: ‘I love this campaign and I especially love how the supporting work around it was no afterthought. With limited resources (I think it’s maybe 3 locations and one lead in total) I can feel the director working here. Performance nuances are very funny and love the subtle digs at the other brands. It’s tongue in cheek and I feel this campaign will shake this category up.’

AWARDED: CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Spitfire Films | JT Moatshe
Ballantine’s ‘Stay True Cities’
IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Jabulani Sigege, Executive Creative Director at Machine_
June 2022

Jabulani’s comment: ‘A superbly directed mini-documentary that allows two of Pretoria’s hottest DJs, Mellow and Sleazy, to tell their tale of how they got together and created their Pitori-influenced Amapiano sound. Their story is enhanced by them telling it in their mother tongues and bringing in locations from their respective hoods, and people who have been along for their journey or know them. All of the above combine to create a compelling narrative that is gritty, authentic and can’t be anything but Mzansi. The director knew what they wanted and made sure they got it.’

AWARDED: CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Spitfire Films | Katlego Baaitse
YAP ‘Digital Banking’
IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Mzi Kumalo, Founder and Director at Olamuk
February 2022

Mzi’s comment: ‘Katlego does a good job with this piece, using the medium cleverly to deliver a fun energetic piece with a sprinkle of humour. It’s visually compelling and does a good job of communicating the offering of the product/service.’

AWARDED: CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Spitfire Films | Waldo Pretorius
Loeries ‘Uber’ & ‘Dictator’
IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Bridget Johnson, Consulting Executive Creative Director at WICK
September 2018

Judge’s comment: “Thanks to Waldo Pretorius from Spitfire for bringing a nostaglic smile to my face on the Loeries spots, ‘Uber’ & ‘Dictator’, and for making work that looks nothing like anything else at the moment.”

AWARDED: CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Spitfire Films | AK
ISUZU ‘Made From Real’
IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Jenny Glover, Executive Creative Director at TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris
April 2016

Judge’s comment: “AK from Spitfire Films: The music choice on Isuzu, Made from Real is very early 2000’s but in a good way.  It really lifts what is a largely functional story and script..”

Spitfire, a decade of ‘Challenge Accepted’

December 14th, 2022|Comments Off on Spitfire, a decade of ‘Challenge Accepted’

Let’s face it, team Spitfire has never quite fit into the traditional production company box. Over the past 10 years they have always approached work with the same attitude of ‘Where there’s a screen, there’s an opportunity’. But hey, a production company that has an in-house Head of Content is a production company that just thinks differently.

Spitfire’s director JT Moatshe – filmmaker, music producer, cool guy

May 27th, 2022|Comments Off on Spitfire’s director JT Moatshe – filmmaker, music producer, cool guy

Over 4 years ago JT Moatshe joined Spitfire as their in-house sound designer and music composer. Fiercely in love with film, curious and eager to learn, he worked his way up to videographer and photographer and eventually found his seat at the table as a fully-fledged Spitfire director. JT has already built up quite a reel of content and commercials, but what makes this filmmaker such an agile director is his ability to combine his visuals with his ear for music and sound design chops. Here’s why JT Moatshe should be on your radar.
