Clear Angle Studios partners with local scanning company, Robot Air!

From Woman King to Mission: Impossible, South Africa has played host to big-budget international productions, lured by stunning landscapes, diverse locations, and competitive production costs. Now, Cape Town-based Robot Air has joined forces with the Pinewood-headquartered Clear Angle Studios, global leader in 3D capture services to bring world-class scanning technology and expertise to the region.

Thanks to this collaboration, productions shooting in South Africa will now have direct access to a full suite of globally-recognised 3D capture services, from character and costume scanning to LiDAR, props, and full-environment capture. The partnership will also provide studios with ultra high-resolution 3D facial scan data, made possible by combining Clear Angle Studios’ full-body system with innovative capturing workflows. It’s the kind of solution that could make South Africa an even more compelling destination for international studios, while also empowering local productions to deliver world-class results.

But this move isn’t just about high-end gear. At its heart, the partnership is about building local capacity. Clear Angle Studios will be upskilling Robot Air’s South African team in their signature scanning systems and workflows, ensuring that global standards are met, without the need to import foreign crews. The result? More jobs, more expertise, and more creative firepower staying right here at home.

The timing couldn’t be better. The partnership comes amid a national push to expand South Africa’s film and television infrastructure. New studio complexes are being planned near the Cradle of Humankind and in KwaZulu-Natal, while the South African government, through the Industrial Development Corporation and proposed new tax credit systems from South African Revenue Service, is working to make our country even more competitive as a film hub.

Speaking to us about the announcement, Robin Hook, Founder and Managing Director of Robot Air, highlighted just how much this could change production in the country:

“Scanning services for international long- and short-format film productions have existed for years, however South Africa has lacked a local vendor supported by a globally recognized leader like Clear Angle Studios. This partnership instils confidence that the high-quality standards major studios expect are now accessible locally, eliminating the need to ship personnel and equipment. Everything is ready and waiting for them right here!”

For Dominic Ridley, co-founder of Clear Angle Studios, the decision to revisit his roots in South Africa was as much about people as it was about technology:

“We chose to partner with Robot Air not only because of their proven expertise and commitment to excellence in the South African market, but also because of their incredible team – we are all about the people! Our goal is to bring Clear Angle’s world-class scanning technology and workflows to Southern Africa, enabling local productions to achieve global standards while fostering growth in the region’s vibrant creative industry”

The message is clear: South Africa’s presence on the global stage is building, not just as a filming location, but as a fully-equipped, world-class production hub.
