Director Jason Fialkov makes Carbon Films home
Director Jason Fialkov has rejoined Carbon Films after several years working independently. The move reunites him with the team behind some of his most recognised work. And while there were plenty of practical reasons for returning, Jason sums it up by saying, “I miss the family.”
“I’ve known Bruno and Kirsten for many years and we’ve always been good friends,” says Jason. “I trust them. They’re passionate filmmakers like myself. I miss sitting around the office, chatting to other directors, seeing their treatments, bouncing ideas around with producers. That’s where the magic happens. Above all, it feels like going back home.”
For Carbon, bringing Jason back was about bringing back a filmmaker with a very particular skill. “Jason is exceptional with performance,” says Carbon co-owner and director Bruno Bossi. “He can take an ordinary script and find something honest in it. That’s rare.”
Executive Producer Kirsten Clarence agrees. “Jason’s biggest strength is performance. He has a natural ability to make people feel comfortable, which is why he gets such authentic performances, especially from non-actors.”
That ability has defined Jason’s career. His work spans comedy, doccie-style storytelling and cinematic ads, but it’s always the performances that stay with you. His acclaimed City of Cape Town campaign, ‘Boys Do What Men Teach Them’, earned a Direction Merit at The One Show and is still one the most powerful public service campaigns we’ve seen.

As Carbon and Jason begin this next chapter together, both are focused on the same thing: making work people remember. Amen!
