PrettyNeat launches Maxime Davenport’s new film that hits a nerve
Released over Mother’s Day weekend, ‘Moms Need Moms Too’, is the new spot PrettyNeat produced to officially launch director Maxime Davenport on their roster. In the film Maxime explores the invisible, unrelenting weight of motherhood, the kind that doesn’t really get posted to Instagram. But this one did and in just a few days, it struck a chord, racking up over 70,000 views on PrettyNeat’s profile.
‘Moms Need Moms Too’
‘Moms Need Moms Too’ is heartfelt, quietly funny, and instantly familiar to anyone who’s ever been the default parent. Crafted as a spec piece imagined for a tech or telecommunications brand, the film is a stripped-back, emotionally resonant take on modern motherhood.
Maxime recently joined the PrettyNeat directing roster, and ‘Moms Need Moms Too’ is a clear reflection of what she brings to the table. With a background in DOP work, editing, and years spent researching for some of South Africa’s top directors, Maxime brings a grounded, detail-driven understanding of craft to her frames. Whether she’s working on high-fashion campaigns or raw, emotionally charged narratives like this one, she brings a refined eye for aesthetics and performance that elevates even the most stripped-back setups.
The project was kept lean and in-house from script to post, with the exception of colour grading by Kitso Monare at Refinery.
“At the heart of it all,” says Executive Producer, Tassyn Munro Fynn, “we just wanted to make something honest. We knew that if we kept the focus on performance and emotion, it would cut through.” And it certainly did.

Maxime says about the film, “This concept is near and dear to me. I’ve spent four years as a mom of one, and the last year learning what it means to be a mom of two. Let me tell you the all-consuming nature of parenting cannot be understated and so making films about parenting and stories centred around childhood feels like an ideal niche and something that I can speak to authentically right now.
When you do a passion project and there’s minimal budget you really are reminded that spirit of filmmaking is still alive in our industry, because on barebones, we managed to craft something exceptional and everyone put their backs into ensuring that this project became everything it had the potential to be. I had a super supportive and dedicated team, and without them I don’t think this would be anything, really.”

Director Maxime Davenport and her star on set
She frames the idea, saying, “I love my kids, of course I do. But them always needing me – not so much. It’s cute when they choose me over my husband to comfort them when they get injured, or when they fall asleep on my chest in the dead of night. It is however, not cute when all day, all I hear is ‘MOM’, for all incidents and events, even those that can’t be classified as urgent or a justified request for my attention. By the end of days like these, I need my mother too. And this is the idea in a nutshell…Moms need moms too.”
As spec ads go, this one doesn’t shout. But that’s its strength. It gently reaches through the noise. Well done Maxime, this really is PrettyNeat!
