“I love how VW’s ‘Forever Golf’ campaign leans into genuine cultural roots, it’s not just about launching a new car, it’s a love letter to decades of Golf stories as told through the framing of Sanaa Mothabisa’s lens. By asking South Africans to name the new Golf and celebrating the nicknames that emerged over eight generations, VW is handing over creative power to its community in such a warm, inclusive way. It’s smart, nostalgic, and beautifully human; a real tribute to the Golf’s legacy and its place in people’s lives.”

ABOUT THE WORK
The South African car market is more competitive than ever before, with 50 new vehicles launching in 2025 alone. (NAAMSA). So, how did we launch the new Golf, a car that’s been around since 1978? You offer what the competitors can’t: Culture. Since the first Golf rolled off the assembly line, South Africans have been nicknaming them. It’s a tradition deeply rooted in South African communities, and this passionate fanbase. To them, the Golf is more than a car, it’s family. So, we handed the keys to the campaign, to the very people who have driven the Golf brand and legacy forward over the years. Introducing Forever Golf.
A campaign For the People, for By The People. We began by partnering with car clubs and communities from across the country, featuring Golf lovers from all 7 generations of this iconic vehicle. From the petrol heads to the families next door, Rabbit to 7 Reasons Why, each episode spoke to the generations of Golf, the nicknames given over the years and the people that loved them. We then called on South Africa to drive the tradition forward and #NameThisGolf, through social media, DOOH, direct mailers, and content creation.
The People spoke and names came in from all corners of Mzansi. We then celebrated them with unique digital artworks, that inspired our geo-targeted murals, executed in the communities that named them. We then handed new Golf owners unique badges featuring their own special nickname. A tribute to this 47-year-old culture – because: “The lovely thing about our country is that we make things our own.” – Leonard Vanzeeberg in episode 1. Forever Golf connected with the people like never before, surpassing every KPI, and once again establishing that Volkswagen really is The People’s Car.
