CRAFT MENTION (DIRECTION)
Klipdrift ‘Brannas vir die Mannas’
They | Alan Irvin
Awarded by Cindy Lee
Judge’s comment: ‘This wonderful cast brought this one alive without overdoing it. Just enough performance, just enough pause. Alan let the script do the work without over working the script. That’s craft right there. And having worked with the Springboks a few times myself, I give him another nod for catching the moments he did. I have no idea what they’re saying half the time but I can’t stop giggling. Nice one Alan.’ – Cindy Lee, Director at The Star Film Company
ABOUT THE WORK
If there is one thing we know, it’s that us South Africans love Klippies & Coke? It’s what we live for. It’s what Friday, Saturday, Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays are all about. There’s no doubt. If you’re a South African and your heart pumps green and gold, then you love a Brannas. Yet, we’ve never given the dop an official name and it’s criminal.
After a couple of weeks of name-chucking and banter, something magical happens. Prins and Lionel, stumble into three Springbok legends at a bar. Including none other than Deon Fourie… Brannas himself. This is it. Their World Cup final. Time to deliver every nickname they’ve cooked up with the confidence of men who’ve been rehearsing in the mirror.
The timing of the film was no accident, it dropped just as rugby fever kicked off and Klipdrift renewed its sponsorship with the Springboks. The humour lands on a few levels, from proudly unhinged names like Klipney Houston, A Klipflix Original and Brancois van Coke, to smart nods to players like Brannas for Deon Fourie and Klippie le Roux for Willie. And since we knew the Boks couldn’t act to save their lives, we just got them to nod along, which in our humble opinion only made it funnier.
For the brand, the humour does more than entertain. It builds love. It makes Klipdrift feel like it’s in on the joke with the rest of the country. It turns a drink into a cultural conversation. And in a category full of clichés and empty nostalgia, it gives Klipdrift something rare. Real affection.
Because no matter how you drink your brandy & coke, met ys, measured with four fingers, or only during the rugby. It Must Be Klippies.
