CANNES DAILY DIARY: Day 2 with Gale Maimane

South Africa’s Cannes Daily Diary, brought to you by IDIDTHAT and VRtuosus. Following South Africa’s creative virtuosos at Cannes Lions 2026.

Darling Films director and Open Chair Lioness Gale Maimane is experiencing Cannes Lions for the first time, and by day two she’s already learned some valuable lessons: always eat breakfast, walking is often faster than traffic, and the best conversations aren’t always the ones happening on stage.

By Gale Maimane | Day 2: Open Chair Lionesses Cohort, Cannes Lions 2026

I’m a first timer, no team to disappear into, just me and thirteen wonderful other South African women here through the Open Chair, trying to drink this whole festival through a straw.

So here’s my honest answer to ‘how was Le Croisette?’: it was a lot. In the best way. Today was a good day. I learned my lesson on Day 1 and treated it as prep, not performance. Walked the Croisette, did the campus tour, scouted where things were on the map. That groundwork is the reason Day 2 landed the way it did.

Breakfast first, properly. Someone warned me the sessions would crack my mind open and they undersold it. By the time I got to the Palais I understood why – there is no catching up once you’re behind on food here. The day moves faster than your legs can carry you, and a missed meal becomes a 4pm crisis disguised as creative fatigue.

I’m staying centre-Cannes, close enough to walk everywhere, and I’ve learned fast that walking beats sitting in traffic that locals keep telling me is totally normale. The 2km bumper-to-bumper jams and the heaving pavements are apparently the festival’s once-a-year personality, not the everyday city. Hydration became its own full-time job by afternoon.

Architecture Breakfast Snap, Traffic, Sunset in the City

The real highlight of this day was our Open Chair session with Shelley Zalis of the Female Quotient through Open Chair. We got the opportunity to Listen to a woman who’s shaped this industry talk plainly about boundaries, creativity and intentionality, I kept thinking about how much of what wins here isn’t cleverness for its own sake, it’s ingenuity in service of something human. You can feel the industry’s mood shifting in real time, from ‘branded content’ to branded entertainment. The old line was always ‘if you’re going to interrupt someone’s entertainment, be entertaining.’ This week it feels less like an interruption problem and more we are finally accepting they have to earn the watch, the listen, the read.

Walk to Work City Architecture

I’ve noted that creative intentionality and practical ingenuity are irreplaceable – seeing this translate through the wining works. There was a quieter thread running through almost every session I got to: a kind of exhale around AI. Not denial, not panic, just people settling into the idea that it’s a tool, not an answer. Mia Rafowitz, Creative Director at Droga5 said it plainly in one of the talks: you can’t outsource your ideas to robots. Whether the work was scamped by hand or storyboarded frame by frame with AI assistance, the thing that actually won in the room was always the same, work with the team found a true, specific, human nugget and built the whole idea around it.

Cannes Award show

What’s stayed with me most isn’t a single talk though, it’s the people. Old friends from home, brand new friends made while queuing for things, and a few heroes who turned out to be completely unguarded when you just said hello. I came in with a loose plan and a tighter ‘yes, and’ instinct, and that’s what’s actually carried me through two days, choosing curiosity over a rigid schedule, every single time it was offered.

If there’s one thing I’d tell another South African reading this from home, plan enough to feel safe, then let the festival surprise you anyway. Eat your breakfast. Walk when you can. Say yes more than you think you should.

Tomorrow I do it all again. I can’t wait.
