Robin is one of those true filmmakers with incredible visual artistry chops. He’s blessed with the double superpower of being able to create evocative imagery while crafting powerful performances. With multiple Cannes Lion awards, a Loerie Grand Prix, over 15 years of commercial directing experience and two feature films under his belt, Robin adds his experience to the already established roster at They.

On why They, Robin says, ‘They is a production company that’s got a real edge to it. I like that it’s a production house with such senior directors and high level of expertise, I think that’s very compelling.’

Whether Robin is directing comedy spots or action-thriller feature films, his characters and their development in his stories stand out. He brings such a feeling to his narrative work, especially in the smallest nuances and we can’t wait to see what’s next for Robin, especially with the production muscle of They.

And it’s not just his characters that stay with you, but also Robin’s strong visual imagery. Understandable, when you consider his background. Robin began his creative career as an artist, living in Italy for 8 years where he exhibited his video art installations, sculptures and photographic art. His artistic journey saw him working as a sought-after and multi-award-winning agency Art Director in both Italy and South Africa before saying arrivederci to agency life and becoming a full-time commercial filmmaker.

‘Coming from an agency background I have a deep understanding of both the agency and client perspective. I know the challenges agency creatives face and what they are up against. From the moment I pitch to final client approval, my role is to make sure we get the very best work in the most rewarding way possible,’ says Robin.

Recently Robin took his performance directing toolbelt to the long-form world and directed his second feature film, titled Free State. The film is described as ‘A Neo-Western set in present day South Africa. Definitely give it a watch it on DSTV catch-up now.
