IDIDTHAT Craft Awards September 2025 – View Showcase

ABOUT THE WORK
Katlego spots Thakzin’s 3-Step on Radar.
Every now and then someone comes along who changes their piece of the world forever. Thakzin – real name Thabang Mathebula – Producer, DJ, and part Ninja is one such artist. The originator of 3-Step Afro House, Thakzin’s musical career has been on an incredible trajectory following the release of his breakthrough single, “The Magnificent Dance”, which has taken him to headline clubs in Europe, North America and beyond. Inspired by the deep spirituality of the drumming he was exposed to growing up, Thakzin’s ground breaking style has now caught the ear, and the attention, of Spotify’s Radar program, designed to showcase and support artists on their upward journey.

So it’s appropriate that another artist on his own impressive trajectory, Spitfire Director Katlego Baaitse, was approached by Spotify Africa to create a short documentary about Thakzin, his life and his music. It’s a project that’s sparked a healthy dose of intense creativity in Katlego himself, because the extraordinary power and elegance of his latest work for Spotify is matched only by Thakzin’s own obsessive and uncompromising commitment to his art.

The belief and devotion of Thakzin’s family and team – father December Mathebula, Manager Smanga Memela, sister and Road Manager Nhlanhla “Smith” Mathebula, and Creative Director and Artist Manager – or Branager – Phil Darimont – are captured with Katlego’s trademark style and sensitivity, pulling the viewer in and fully immersing them in the creative process that is Thakzin’s intensely spiritual and emotional journey.
