ABOUT THE WORK
Meet Queeni. Queeni is long legs, fit for the Queen of the shebeen. Ironically you’ll never find Queeni drunk because a woman of God never drinks her own stock. when you choose a life, you fucking stick with it! She sings the gospels of Lebo Mathosa and Brenda Fassie. Rebellion and resistance are her super powers but like those legs, she’s devastatingly alluring.
Boosting a velvet band to censor her tiny tits. The Siyababa Atelier vinyl chastity skirt preserves her virginity from small dicks and broke men – she looks as good as her draped curtains, doesn’t she? Don’t mind the hole on the couch, that’s just her husband, Dumisani back from his Bachelor party with his boys.
Queeni’s only blemish is ubab’Dumisani but he makes for a great accessory at the Shebeen. Dumisani and Queeni remind us of Yin and Yang but we’re in South Africa 1982 so they’re just Dumisani and Queeni.
Comments from Retang: ‘this one really is a cool one. Because I also shoot stills, when Siyababa (the brand) approached me to shoot their latest collection, it has such a beautiful story about this kasi legend (Queenie) who, despite being the powerful figure she is, is having marital troubles at home so we shot a few snippets that served as trailers or little windows into their life. Now, I really do wish I to get the chance to expand this further into a short film because it’s really powerful (to me).’
