Rapists’ identities are protected by law. Spitfire’s Ying-Poi is campaigning to change that.

In South Africa, if a survivor publicly names their rapist, they can face up to three years in jail. It’s a nonsensical apartheid-era law that keeps rapists anonymous and silences rape victims. One that Catherine and Phil Ireland, in collaboration with the Women’s Legal Centre and ad agency Avatar, were determined to do something about.

The reality that speaking publicly about their attackers could turn survivors into criminals fired up Spitfire Director Ying-Poi, too, who immediately came on board to support the campaign. Conceptualised by Catherine and Phil, ‘NXME HIM’ uses a creative loophole that enables women to symbolically name their accusers without technically doing so. Highlighting the senselessness of the law and, at the same time, aiming to bring it to the attention of the Minister of Justice, Mmamoloko Kubayi, in the hope of finally changing it.
