Ari Kruger | Director
Ari is a two-time SAFTA Best Comedy Director winner for his mockumentary series Tali’s Wedding Diary and Tali’s Baby Diary, as well as the co-creator and director of the hugely popular web series SuzelleDIY. Ari’s foray into advertising has brought equal success, with his exceptional ability to direct performance and conceive visual humour quickly making waves in the shorter format. His feel for comedic timing and understanding of tonality make him equally adept at both situational humour and more stylised narratives, and his strong visual sensibility and background in post-production shine through in work that is distinct, punchy and memorable.
Sam Coleman | Director
Sam’s time as an art director at top creative hotshops gave him an appreciation for craft and originality, so it’s no coincidence that those two things shine through in his work. It also means that his unique imagery and his visceral storytelling style are first built on careful conceptual consideration. Sam is collaborative by nature but likes to elevate concepts to interesting and unexpected places; hence he’s good at rallying people around a distinct vision for a project. He’s a natural storyteller with a unique eye, so he’s going to surprise you with how he sees your script.
Thati Pele | Director
A natural born storyteller, Thati’s rare eye for characters and situations and her sense of timing and performance mean she’s as comfortable telling vivid human stories as she is at making people laugh out loud. After completing a degree in mathematics and statistics at UCT (and working for a short spell in marketing) she applied to the Graduate Film Program at NYU. There Thati made her short film “Lerato”, winning Best Director at the New York Fusion Film Festival and the New Talent prize at CICLOPE Africa 2019. Thati’s narrative prowess soon saw her helm smash Netflix series’ Blood & Water and Savage Beauty, while her hilarious spots for brands like VW and Spotify quickly put her on the map as a major new commercial talent.
Tumelo Moropa | Director
Tumelo’s background in fine art, copywriting, and music production make him a unique collaborator. He’s an experienced director who understands humour, mzansirisms and great acting, and his aptitude for visual storytelling and performance have made him a sought after performance and comedy director waya waya. Zayd Halim | Producer
With over 21 years of experience in commercial production, Zayd Halim is a respected leader in the South African advertising industry. Starting his career at Velocity Films in 2005, Zayd quickly rose through the ranks under the guidance of top producers. In 2011, he partnered with director Anton Visser, and together they launched Patriot Films in 2017.

When the craft is of such a high level, it becomes almost invisible, leaving one just totally immersed in the story. This piece truly honours the Bank Heist genre, with every shot, every character and every lighting set up so carefully considered, resulting in a blockbuster feel that could sit comfortably in a Christopher Nolan piece like Dark Knight Rises.’

Hylton’s comment: ‘Although a solid campaign for KFC overall, “Boot” stood out for me as the best of the bunch. It’s so refreshing to see screen time being utilised to tell a story. So many scripts are jam packed with wall to wall vignettes, or way too much narrative for its duration – so to see a simple, singular story about a person unable to resist tucking into some KFC, felt like I was watching a scene from a movie. The one taker, locked off camera works a treat, effortlessly combined with a Tarantino-esque inside the boot POV. I loved the camera remaining in the closed boot with the KFC bucket, building suspense while awaiting the inevitable. A good looking spot with a great cinematic canvass, and personally, knowing how difficult it can be to get those appetite appeal consumption shots, she really looks like she’s digging that KFC. Sam nailed it.’
