Bohemian, the design and animation studio helping purpose-led campaigns handle messaging that matters
Bohemian is a Joburg-based design and animation studio working with brands, NGOs and agencies on purpose-led campaigns that need to be communicated clearly and with care, across branding and design, digital content, social media, strategy, and story-led animation.
Over the past five years, Bohemian has built a strong specialisation in purpose-led communication, partnering directly with brands and NGOs, and at times collaborating with agencies on briefs that need real purpose-led understanding. Their work has increasingly focused on wellness, sexual health and social impact, taking them across multiple markets on the African continent and elsewhere in the world. “When you’re working across different markets, you have to understand how something is going to land, not just how it looks,” says co-founder Via Henderson. That thinking carries through the work, in the language, the visuals and the level of care taken to ensure messaging is both effective and respectful.
As MSI Reproductive Choices, which focuses on enabling women and girls to take control of their reproductive health, repositioned itself as a women’s wellness brand across 16 African markets, it needed storytelling that felt real, culturally sensitive and grounded in the lives of the women it serves. This was a campaign about building trust.
Working with a modest budget, Bohemian developed and produced a series of campaign films inspired by real stories from across the region. Each was carefully reenacted to protect privacy while preserving emotional truth, with the content structured around key life stages to make it relatable across diverse communities. The result struck the right balance between clarity and care, strengthening MSI’s visibility and supporting its repositioning with work that audiences could connect with and trust.

A similar level of intention runs through the work they did for Paramount. The 16 Days of Activism for GBV campaign needed to shift the narrative around gender-based violence away from victimhood and toward accountability. Instead of following the usual framing, Bohemian developed a series of films built on confronting familiar phrases and turning them into uncomfortable truths, using language and tactile visual treatments to challenge passive complicity and reframe the conversation.

Correct the Map campaign needed to Challenge distorted global perceptions of Africa’s true scale. Bohemian use editorial-inspired design and animation to challenge global misconceptions around Africa’s scale, contributing to a wider movement that reframes how Africa is understood on the world map.
For ‘Correct the Map’, Bohemian used bold, editorial-inspired design and animation to challenge global misconceptions around Africa’s scale.
Bohemian is structured as an agile, senior-led team is led by co-founders Kyle Lutchman, Executive Creative Director, and Via Henderson, Director, alongside Roman Ratush as Lead Multimedia Designer, with Lesego Kekane, Mmalebu Mashile and Chantelle Dreshney Hlongwane completing the team. It’s a tight, experienced group that scales depending on the brief, with no unnecessary overheads and no overcomplication, just the right people on the job.
Via says “Right now, brands are under pressure to show up everywhere, across more platforms, more audiences and more content than ever before, but more often than not, the real challenge isn’t volume, it’s clarity.” That’s where Bohemian fits in. They’re built for work that needs to travel across cultures, handle sensitive subject matter and scale without losing meaning.
“Anything that really makes this country shine, I want to be there,” says Kyle.
If you’re working on purpose-led campaigns, across multiple markets, or with culturally nuanced messaging where the goal isn’t just awareness but real behavioural shift, Bohemian should be on your radar (here’s looking at you Discovery, SA Tourism, Brand South Africa, Old Mutual, Kotex, Lil-Lets, VIYA Health and City of Cape Town). This is the kind of work they’ve built their name on, and increasingly the kind of work that matters, helping brands navigate complexity with a level of care that’s hard to fake.
