‘Whispering Commentator’ Case Study

ABOUT THE WORK

In South Africa, the noise curfew kicks in soon after UEFA Champions League matches kick off. By law, noise must be reduced from 22:00. But how do you silence fans who’ve waited all year for this? You don’t. And Heineken knew that before they even started.

Working with DStv SuperSport, South Africa’s official sports broadcaster, Heineken created the Whispering Commentator, the world’s first commentator to deliver live football commentary in a whisper. Accessible via Whisper Mode, a dedicated, real, selectable audio channel, fans could tune in across the semifinals and experience the same commentator energy they are used to, just turned all the way down to a whisper.

The DStv platform had never been used this way before. But the insight that drove it wasn’t about compliance, it was about knowing your audience. Heineken didn’t build Whisper Mode because they thought a curfew could contain South African football fans. They built it because they knew it couldn’t. The passion was always going to find a way through. Whisper Mode just made sure it had somewhat of a place to go.

Heineken didn’t interrupt the viewing experience. They added to it. When curfew hit, fans didn’t disengage; they simply switched channels and kept watching. Because you can turn down the volume, but you can’t turn down passion.

Heineken became the brand that understood South African football fans well enough to know they were never going to stop watching, and that football passion would never be silenced. That’s how a legal restriction became a media first.
