Eersteling Boerdery: ‘n Kortfilm

John Deere Financial ‘Eersteling Boerdery’ Cutdown

ABOUT THE WORK

Labour of Love is a 10-minute documentary that reframes agricultural marketing by placing farmers, not brands, at the centre of the story. Created for John Deere Financial, the film explores farming as both a business and a calling, shaped by land, legacy, and collective effort. Told through the voices of the farmer, his family, workers, and community, the documentary captures the human realities behind agricultural success.

Rather than leading with product or promotion, John Deere Financial stepped back, positioning itself as a quiet enabler, a trusted partner present through belief, support, and long-term commitment. The film was launched in partnership with Landbouweekblad, one of South Africa’s leading agricultural publication, ensuring contextual credibility and relevance within the farming community.

By choosing long-form documentary storytelling over traditional advertising, the campaign built emotional resonance, trust, and brand meaning, demonstrating that in agriculture, true partnership is shown not by what a brand says, but by how it stands alongside those who carry the weight of the land.

In the agricultural sector, credibility is built over time and through action, not advertising. John Deere Financial operates in a category dominated by functional messaging, yet farmers make decisions rooted in trust, partnership, and long-term commitment. The challenge was to build brand meaning and relevance without traditional promotion, in a way that respected the lived realities of South African farmers and reflected how they view true partnerships.

Farming is not simply a business; it is a responsibility shaped by land, legacy, and community. Farmers do not value brands that speak loudly, but those that show up consistently and enable progress over time. True partnership in agriculture is earned quietly, through belief, support, and shared risk. This insight led to a strategy where John Deere Financial would step back, allowing the farmer’s story to lead.

The creative idea, “Labour of Love,” presents farming as both a calling and a collective effort. The documentary tells the story through the voices of the farmer, his family, workers, and community, revealing the human realities behind agricultural success. John Deere Financial appears only in context, reinforcing its role as a supportive partner rather than a central character.

Visually, the piece embraced a cinematic 10minute documentary style; natural light, expansive landscapes, intimate human moments, and observational storytelling allowing the farmer’s voice and environment to lead the narrative organically. John Deere equipment and the role of John Deere Financial were intentionally positioned as subtle but meaningful enablers in the background: trusted partners helping make growth, continuity, and sustainability possible.

Long-form video was essential to capture the depth, emotion, and complexity of farming life. The documentary format allowed for patience and authenticity. The film launched in partnership with Landbouweekblad, South Africa’s leading agricultural publication, using its social media platforms to place the story within a trusted, relevant agricultural environment rather than traditional advertising channels.
