Scholars Film
The foundation of a Scholar’s production is a powerful narrative packaged in technical excellence. We strive to create work that’s authentically rooted in Africa with a global reach.
Durban & Cape Town
Scholars Film is a fully-fledged production company producing short and long form film content, providing a full range of production services from concept to delivery.
We believe the most powerful way to communicate is through storytelling. As storytellers, there’s no better place to be than Africa, a continent as beautiful as it is fascinating. While we strive to create work that’s authentically rooted in Africa, it’s equally important to us that it has a global reach, which means that the foundation of a Scholar’s film is a powerful narrative, packaged in technical excellence.
Our film directors, Greg Lomas and Colwyn Thomas, founded Scholars and have created a culture of care and attention to each and every aspect of projects they direct; maintaining the high standards of Scholars output and experience. Whilst we regularly produces commercial content a vital pillar of our company is work with social impact – this allows us to attain international standards of production above the service providers needs, and hopefully for a greater good.
Our core team works consistently with a network of incredible crew across the African continent. We’re hands-on, mobile and highly adaptable, often producing globally-recognised content with small, versatile teams.
Whilst based in South Africa we have produced work across the continent including Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and the D.R.C as well as further afield in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Brazil, Switzerland, the U.K., Belgium and the U.S.A.
Greg Lomas: With a rich background in marketing, graphic design, and photography, Greg approaches each project with both creative vision and strategic insight. “We get our hands dirty,” Greg says, reflecting his immersive approach across all aspects of production. His ranking as the Loeries’ #1 Film Director for his outstanding work on Chasing the Sun – which earned the Loeries Grand Prix, a SAFTA for Best Made-for-TV Documentary, and went on to receive a second International Emmy nomination in 2025 for Chasing the Sun 2 – highlights his commitment to excellence and work with purpose. Calm under pressure and deeply reliable, Greg thrives on the adventures his work brings. He constantly seeks innovative ways to move audiences, ensuring each client’s story stands out in a world of copy-and-paste content.
Colwyn Thomas: Co-founder of Scholars Film and winner of a Gold Lion at Cannes and Best Director at the SAFTAs, Colwyn is a director and writer with roots in illustration and journalism. Those origins continue to inform a strong visual sensitivity to storytelling and a creative process driven by conversation and collaboration. “We like to talk as much as we can and ask a lot of questions of our clients and partners,” he says. “The creative process needs a really rigorous structure so that everyone can love being part of it. But there has to be room for vulnerability – that’s what makes work that stays with an audience long after they’ve stopped watching.”
In 2025, Colwyn’s work continued to receive international recognition, including a Bronze Loerie for Zuzu the Hermit Crab, two Bronze awards at the London International Awards (Social and Digital), and a Clio Sports Award for Epic Battles, reinforcing his reputation for emotionally resonant work that travels across platforms and borders.
