On 15 July 2016, SAA became one of the world’s first airlines to fly using a brand-new type of biofuel – a tobacco-based fuel that radically reduces greenhouse gas emissions. It’s both environmentally friendly and economically efficient.

To mark the event, we created an artistic representation of how tobacco – a product commonly associated with harmful effects – can, in the right hands, be a force for good. From paper, we made a cigarette carton, then transformed the interior to create a micro-sized SAA plane interior scaled down to the size of the cigarette carton.

This art piece was then put on public display at SAA’s Via Lounge at OR Thambo Airport, South Africa’s biggest airport.
