Black Crown Gin & Tonic ‘Put Your Crown On Ice’
ABOUT THE WORK
Black Crown celebrates the young Africans who wear the crown of success every day, carrying the weight of leadership, legacy, and high expectations. The film is aimed at young people who deserve a break, the chance to put themselves first, and embrace life’s lighter moments. Black Crown is there to remind them that it’s okay to set the crown down and enjoy the simple moments. Put Your Crown On Ice.
JUDGE’S NOTES
This project focuses heavily on the music. I spent a significant amount of time with the director, Lebo, editing the different musical layers. Because the music plays such a big role in shaping the piece’s atmosphere, we aimed to have the right instruments and voices enter at just the right moments.
I also applied a range of audio processing to make the music feel like part of the characters’ world. In one section, a group of men listens to music on vinyl. For this, we stripped the music down to only the rhythm section and processed it to sound like it was coming from a vinyl player.
Later, there’s a short scene where a man rides a bicycle in reverse. For this part, I wanted the music to evoke a sense of the reverse motion without being jarring. I edited the rhythm section (bass guitar and drums) to play normally, while the lead instruments and synths play in reverse.
