Best in Craft awarded to Helen and Kim for ‘Boni & Wes’ AND Gregg Bailey for SportsHosts ‘United by Sports’

Let’s slowly step away from that banana bread and celebrate our clever, resilient and creative industry and the brilliant craft they’ve created.

As of February, our Craft Awards got a whole lot more judgy mcjudgerson – we now have TWO judges independently selecting South Africa’s Best in Craft. March’s IDIDTHAT Craft Awards welcomes Executive Creative Director at FCB Joburg, Suhana Gordhan and Film Editor at Deliverance Post, Ricky Boyd.

‘What are the IDIDTHAT.co Craft Awards?’ Every month we team up with ad industry leaders to award the finest in South African film and production craft across these different categories: Direction, Editing, Cinematography, Animation and SFX, Online, Original Sound, Sound Design and Final Mix. It’s just another way that we make it ridiculously easy to stay up-to-date with who’s doing the best work in the country.

BEST IN CRAFT (Direction)
Awarded by Suhana Gordhan
Short Film ‘Boni & Wes’
Motion City Films | Helen & Kim (Direction Craft)

“This is a hard story to tell because in many ways it’s still a protest story in this country, and in the world. I think it’s remarkable to be able to do protest in a gentle and tender way. Every choice made by the directors – from the way the narration overlays the story, to the quiet yet confrontational intimacy to the mingling of moments of light and shade – makes this film really powerful, effortlessly honest, and beautiful.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Suhana Gordhan, ECD at FCB Joburg

BEST IN CRAFT (Direction)
Awarded by Ricky Boyd
SportsHosts ‘United by Sports’
Figment Films | Gregg Bailey (Direction Craft)

“The performances where very convincing and timing and pace of the edit left us just enough clues as the story resolved. With advertising, we still need to make the product somehow relevant to the concept, and I believe Greg and Anthony achieved this well without ramming it down our throats. Well done guys. Simple and effective.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Ricky Boyd, Film Editor at Deliverance Post

CRAFT SPECIAL MENTION (Cinematography)
Awarded by Suhana Gordhan and Ricky Boyd
Short Film ‘Boni & Wes’
Zenn van Zyl (Cinematography Craft)
*Entered on behalf of Zenn van Zyl by Motion City Films

“It felt only right to acknowledge the role of cinematography in the making of ‘Boni & Wes’. I think the cinematography played a significant role in honouring what I mentioned the directing did – which was to tell this story in such a gentle way. The lensing, lighting and framing all contributed to creating this fine balance of intimacy yet bold openness. It’s truthful without being stark, beautiful without being overly orchestrated.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Suhana Gordhan, ECD at FCB Joburg

“On this controversial piece from Helen and Kim, Zenn van Zyl has worked hard to combine contrasting visual styles with unusual lighting and grade treatments. The attention to detail in the framing is immediately apparent and while some “looks” work better than others, they complement the awkward and tricky subject matter.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Ricky Boyd, Film Editor at Deliverance Post

CRAFT SPECIAL MENTION (Direction)
Awarded by Suhana Gordhan & Ricky Boyd
Savanna Jean ‘Survivor’
Romance Films | Greg Gray (Direction Craft)

“Oh what a joy! I laugh every single time I watch this piece because it so accurately captures the pretentiousness that has become the world of gin. I like that this is an ad about all the fuss and pomp around serving a gin cocktail and so the choice to have such attention to detail, such craft and perfection in the styling, wardrobe and performances – from the tattoos and the earring the bartender is sporting to the exaggerated flair in his serving performance, makes it all extra rewarding.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Suhana Gordhan, ECD at FCB Joburg

“As always Greg deliverers with this ad. It would be hard not to give it a mention. We have become used to his consistent attention to detail, from casting, locations and performance. This ad was fun to make and it is apparent in its execution.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Ricky Boyd, Film Editor at Deliverance Post

CRAFT SPECIAL MENTION (Direction, Editing, Cinematography & Music)
Awarded by Ricky Boyd
Vicks ‘Where Joy Lives’ #TouchOfCare
Egg Films | Zwelethu Radebe (Direction Craft)
Post Modern | William Kalmer (Editing Craft)
Fabian Vettiger (Cinematography Craft)
Grant Booth Music (Music Craft)
*Entered on behalf of Grant Booth Music and Fabian Vettiger by Egg Films

“A close contender for Best in Craft as all aspects were of such a high standard. It loses its way a bit in the middle, a trap we perhaps fall into when duration is not an issue and we become a tad indulgent. However, the performance, cinematography and edit work hand in hand to deliver on this emotional story. The music is handled well around the narration and while perhaps a little expected, still lends well to the mood. Congratulations to all on the hard work apparent in this piece.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Ricky Boyd, Film Editor at Deliverance Post

CRAFT SPECIAL MENTION (Direction & Editing)
Awarded by Ricky Boyd
South African Tourism ‘Joy Of Jazz’
Motion City Films | Helen & Kim (Direction Craft)
Mario Kowarz (Editing Craft)
*Entered on behalf of Mario by Motion City Films

“Helen and Kim are certainly interesting filmmakers. They have made what could have been a mundane subject, into an edgy and interesting piece, without falling into the trap of overdoing the technique.  Editing isn’t just about cutting pictures. Here Mario uses titles and some flashy editing to make, what is in essence a punt for a jazz festival, into a fresh interesting piece of communication. He also combines sound design and music brilliantly, something that happens in the edit suite, not after in the mix. Lots of hard work, great production value… Well done.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Ricky Boyd, Film Editor at Deliverance Post

CRAFT SPECIAL MENTION (Direction)
Awarded by Suhana Gordhan
Kärcher ‘BRING BACK THE WOW’
Director | Paul Ward (Direction Craft)

“Fashion meets modelling meets music video meets fight choreography meets snippets of horror and thriller with a little bit of crazy euphoria. All this for gardening tools. What’s there not to like? It’s surprising and audacious.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Suhana Gordhan, ECD at FCB Joburg

CRAFT SPECIAL MENTION (Direction & Cinematography)
Awarded by Ricky Boyd
Short Film ‘Heirloom’
Butterfly Films | Felix Seuffert (Direction & Cinematography Craft)

“A subject close to all our hearts right now. This short movie handles it well with some tasteful storytelling. Performances are good, sound design simple and mature and the look and grade seamless. While it might linger a tad in places, it leaves us with all the right feelings. Lots of Love shown here.”
– IDIDTHAT Guest Judge: Ricky Boyd, Film Editor at Deliverance Post

IDIDTHAT GUEST JUDGES:

Suhana Gordhan – Executive Creative Director at FCB Africa
Suhana is a Hindu, who learned very quickly that there are no sacred cows in advertising. One of her favourite moments was during her time as Creative Director on the Peri-Peri chicken brand, Nando’s, when she pissed off a dictator and won a Loerie Grand Prix because of it.
Some of her other accolades include a Black Eagle, numerous Creative Circle Ad of the Year and Loerie Awards, a Silver Pixel at The Bookmarks, 7 Cannes Lions, a graphite D&AD pencil and Best of Show in radio at The One Show Awards.
She was baptized as a Cannes Juror in 2016 on the Direct Panel. In addition, she has served at One Show in the Direct Category in 2017 as well as on Print and Out of Home at The Clios in 2018. Gordhan has a strong commitment to the South African industry and was thus nominated to join both The Loeries Board and The Creative Circle Exco. She is the former Chairperson of The Loerie Awards.
When not making ads, she enjoys people watching, hiking in the mountains and training Capoeira – a 400-year-old Afro-Brazilian Martial Arts (often mistaken by her colleagues to be an innocuous dance form).

Ricky Boyd, Film Editor at Deliverance Post
Ricky Boyd started in the industry as a sound engineer in 1989 and while gaining valuable experience in many aspects of Tv production and advertising, he finally settled into film Editing. After establishing his name, he decided along with Paula Raphael to open up Deliverance Post which has now had their doors open for 14 years. Through the years of hard work and dedication, his work has won various local and international Awards.
When Ricky isn’t staring at the Avid screen for hours on end, he manages to make time to enjoy the outdoors that Cape Town has to offer.
